Windows Vista keeps freezing

Ok, I've been at this for a minute now..any help will be greatly appreciated.

Working on a HP desktop, running Win Vista 64bit. The problem is that it freezes when it gets to the desktop. The amount of time before it freezes varies. Does not lock up in Safe Mode. I suspected a virus or rootkit so in safe mode I've run several cleaners, all come up clean. Also checked for suspicious files (to the best of my ability) seeing nothing. I also ran Process Explorer, HijackThis, Autoruns and nothing suspicious came up.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the sound and audio drivers as well.

Also, none of the boot cd's I have will run (UBCD4WIN, DRWeb, Avira, or Kapersky Rescue) I get either a BSOD or an error saying Windows is not starting successfully.

I think I've covered everything...Any ideas?

Freezes or overheats?. Did you check into that ?.

Lots of other possibilites, but my MEMORY is not that good right now.

ps - You wrote: "Ok, I've been at this for a minute now..any help will be greatly appreciated." I hope that is just some kind of saying where you come from.

See if your boot disks work with the hard drive disconnected. I had a similar problem recently after a lightning storm, where windows wouldn't, but almost loaded. None of my boot disks worked either. Once I disconnected the HD my bootdisks worked no problem. I replaced the HD. I have also seen, in our workshop, a faulty PATA cable do the same thing, bsod and can't load disks.

Yes, that's good old VA slang..:-)

I'm checking the memory now and other hardware...we'll see

Anything in event viewer, this is a valuable tool that is often overlooked. See if an app or service was just starting. Process explorer might come in handy too.

Defiantly check HDD with the manufactures disk and run MemTest. If both come back ok you might be surprised at how well CHKDSK works

Did you look for a rootkit or did you just rely upon 'cleaners'? Is the computer actually freezing or is it slowing because the CPU/HDD are maxing out?

When it freezes at the desktop, are any of the icons displayed? or does it stick at the BSOD? Have you just let it sit and wait to see if ever unfreezes?

Here's some of things I suspect in cases such as this. A Hardware conflict with the cdrom drive, a conflict with the cdrom drive and Vista 64 bit, you may need to update the driver. If it does not freeze when safe booting it's because all the drivers aren't loading. Try booting again with cdrom drive support. If it freezes, update the driver. Also follow Donnakamla advice disconnect the HDD. If that doesn't help reconnect it and disconnect the cdrom. Also, in safe mode, did you check the device manager and see if there are any exclamation marks. I know that if there's too many items in the task manager application list it overloads the CPU. You also can look at the task manager performance tab and see the CPU usage. Had a customer with so much crap loading on boot it just wouldn't breath anymore. You'll find the solution. We help each other here.

LOL:)

If boot CDs are also freazing its likely to be an issue with the the hard drive. If its not a physical problem then CHKDSK often cures it.
