As I said in another thread, I'm getting ready to move into a physical location. I'm not much of a builder.... well I'm not a builder at all. So I just designed a work bench and my dad is building it for me. Going to have a shelf for monitors and an angled shelf off of that for the keyboards. Drilling some holes in the back for wires and using a modified version of the milk carton wire organizer. Adding a lamp with built in magnifying glass, organizer with drawers for screws and jumpers and what not, and adding peg board to the back to hang tools on.

Do you guys have any other suggestions for what I should add? What does your work bench look like?

This is how our workshop looks at the moment. As you can see, its in one heck of a mess, and hope to get it all tidied up over the next couple of weeks..

Pic 8, is the full length of the main work bench. The total length of it is some 9ft. At the far end of the workshop, is heavy duty shelving, which is 2 bays, 3ft wide, with 5 shelves in each.

The main workbench, has holes drilled, with a attempt at hiding the majority of cables. At the back of it, is a 10 port gang, which is fused seperately at the main fuse box. The differing sockets are there, for when customers bring in laptops etc, I do not use their leads, as they are all ready and waiting.

In the house, there is a total of 22 electrical sockets. In the workshop, there are 29. I would say, that at least 14 of these are running 24/7. I will post more pics, after the 'cleanup'..

You smoke in your shop? I'm a smoker too but I don't smoke around my customer's computers. I like how you have the screen hanging up. Do you use a KVM for that at all? The rack for you screwdrivers is exactly what I was thinking about getting.

Yes I do smoke in the workshop.. It's a bad habit, but most of the time, I smoke outside, or in the doorway..

There is a 4 port kvm on top of the hub, (it cant be seen on the pics sorry), I use the kvm for the screen on the left. The silver one, is attached to the main day to day pc.

The screens, are simply attached with hanging brackets, saving a heap of space on the bench.

They are at the right height, when im sat down. (Being 6'4, I have to have them high up lol).

On the floor, which again isnt seen from the pics, is a duck board, which a) keeps my feet warm, b), saves me from standing on concrete all day. One of the best things I've added to the shop without a doubt..

The tool rack, has every tool I ever need for pc's and laptops, built up over a few years, its just how I want it ;).

On the other side of the workshop, is another tool rack, the same as the one shown, where my helper works. He has a his own toolbox, and keeps what he wants in his rack.

Top left, where the small bins are, is where I keep all pc screws of differing sizes, ie mobo, rom's and drives cases etc.

Cadishead, I like what you did with your Ethernet wires in the wall, looks nice.

Here's our setup:

Wires look a lot worse than they actually are. Wires hanging in a loop are actually to test speakers and we kind of just hang them there. Ethernet wires could probably be organized a bit better but I didn't originally set it up :(

Edit: Just linking pictures, posting them in here is wayyyy too big.

Nice setup you have there..

do you use a anti-slip mat or similar?, I would also LOVE the power strip you have there lol.. I couldnt get one larger than a 10 gang, when I was looking.

Have a great weekend

be safe

This is excellent. By looking at your guys' desks, I'm getting some additional ideas for what I will do to mine. Also think I'm going to use the milk carton wire organizer too.

We are going to put a 10 foot counter top in our office drilled for cables, with cabinets underneath and all that. I can't wait to do it. It will really clean up the space.
I like the long bench Cadishead Computers. BTW I can't smoke at my bench because we don't smoke in the house or in the garage!

Our entire office is actually carpeted (unless you're talking about on our bench? if so no:()

Our company is a sister-company of a bigger insurance auditing company which was started as a side-job of an employee who works here.

That is one room within the office, which has its ups and downs. Customers definitely get the "Huh?" look when they walk in and see 6 cubicles of people who don't work for the computer company :P

Hence why there are 2 servers sitting on top of each other in the hd rack picture, 1 is old an unused, the other is a backup for the auditing company. (We all work for both companies, kind of a weird setup)

That's funny because I used to work for a computer store that was in the back of an insurance company. The boss owned them both and started the computer business as a hobby.

No smoking in the garage! Ouch.

a couple of no-nos...

Not to be picky, but the cigarettes and an open can of soda sitting on a workbench in my shop would get someone fired. It's sooo easy to knock something over, spilling soda or flick ashes somewhere, start a fire (of course then you could use the soda to put the fire out ;)), I could go on, but I think you get the point.

Point taken, thanks geeks. I have come across the same scenario, where spilt drinks have found their way into a laptop board, keyboard etc, and there I was, doing pretty much the exact same thing!!

<<< slaps wrists ruddy hard, for being so stupid!.

Over the next couple of weeks, some major changes will be made to the workshop, including a new paint job, complete tidy up, swap around etc, and no smoking in the workshop!!.. By me more than customers..

I have a door at either end, and there is no reason, as to why I can't simply open one or the other to pop outside, for 10 mins, for a cig break.

Thanks for pointing the obvious to me, its just been second nature I have to admit.

We try to run our shop almost like a doctor's office. It is pretty clean and neat. We get a lot of client comments on how nice the shop is kept. I think people appreciate that we are handling their equipment like it is our own. Here are a few picts:

Wow. That's a nice set up. Very clean. I really like a clean environment too. Something like that would attract a higher class customer who wouldn't mind paying more. Even though I won't have a set up like that, I plan on making mine as neat and organized as I can. That's why I am custom building my workbench, so I can put everything on there that I will need to keep it organized. The flat panels are super awesome for all you guys that use them on your bench. All I have is a few old CRTs that I'm going to be using on my bench until I make lots of money. I'm gonna be catching up on my home bills and a new bigger flat screen for me before I'll buy em for the bench. Right now I just have a regular square flat screen hooked to my laptop. Sucks because my laptop has a wide screen, but I had to sacrifice it for the bigger screen even though it is square. What sucks even more is that I had a nice widescreen flat panel hooked up, but the wife took it when she left.

This is making me anxious to get in the new shop and open the doors! But I must have patience so that I can get everything just right before I open up.

That is nice, our shop does not look that nice but we are working hard to improve it.

Flat screens are cheap.

Check this one out. Its an ASUS 19" wide screen.
