Autorun / Autoplay

Hey All,

I built my computer about two years ago, and recently I've had issues with Autorun in my Windows 7 Professional OS. It used to be when I put in a CD or USB stick, it would show up and ask me what I wanted to do. It now fails to do this. I have gone to the autorun settings in the CP and changed them all to ask me first, saved the settings, but still no auto run box.

Any help is appreciated.

Computer Configuration>>Administrative Templates>>Windows Components and then AutoPlay policies. There is also the same in the User Configuration settings so may as well change both.

I have no idea where that is located. Is that in the registry or the CP or what? A bit more info is appreciated.

Group policy editor
gpedit.msc

Changed those settings, still no luck.

In the control panel at the top of the autoplay settings you should check "Use Autoplay for all devices" and click save is this what you did?


In the group policy editor to enable autoplay you have to disable "Turn off Autoplay" under the autoplay polices is this what you did?


What happens when you hold down the left Shift key while inserting a CD? It used to disable autoplay but autoplay has been redesigned. Now holding down the Shift key opens autoplay regardless of the default setting.

You could try the Autoplay Repair Tool from Microsoft. Not sure if it works on Windows 7 though, but I'm sure I've used it on Vista in the past.

do u have any pop up blocker turned on or something like that? when did it stop working, have you tried uninstalling whatever you had installed when it stopped working or do a windows restore point back to when it was working?

I have both of those screen shots as indicated. No pop up software, and not sure when it stopped working. I will try the autorun tool and the shift trick. This should also work for USB flash drives correct?

The microsfoft autorun program crashed whenever it tried to repair the drive. The holding SHIFT key did nothing different, still no autoplay pop up box.

did u try in safe mode?

Tried it in safe mode, nothing came up.

well look at these registry lines other than that either a system restore or wipe and reload

I am able to navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies

but then there is no explore option.

Please double check your and my paths.

I am able to navigate to that path, but I do not know what to change the value to.

Check here first:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\cdrom

Look in the right pane for autorun, a value of 1 means enable autorun (on), while 0 means disable autorun.
Make sure that you are in the CurrentControlSet and not ControlSet001.

You may want to search your registry for autorun and then search for cdrom.

What values is your registry set to now? You may want to write them down before you change them.

I took a look at those pages, changed a few things, but nothing seems to work. I do not have an explorer in the Current User tier, so that might be part of my problem.

Changed the value to a 000000FF in the Local Machine settings and that did the trick. Thank you all for your assistance with this, its nice to have it back!
