Bootmgr not found

I purchased 3 Dell Optiplex (small form factor) 755 from a local city hall. The 80GB HDDs have all been wiped. They gave me reinstallation disks with each unit that also has the COA label. When I try to reinstall the OS (Vista Business) I get through the basic install windows and then it acts as though its going to install, but an error message stating that the BOOTMGR cannot be found comes up. I've researched this a little on the Internet, but haven't really found a good answer as of yet. Will I need to install a full (new) version of Vista?

Are you not a MS Refurbisher? Could update them to 7 pretty cheap if you were.

Why would you want to put Vista on them? Are you giving them away to like a non-profit or something?
No way would I sell a system with Vista...

Not an MS refurbisher. How does one become such? But I would still like to know how to get them working, even if it is with Vista.

If you have an old Vista install disk, would use that instead of the recovery or manufacturer supplied disks.

It sounds like it installs it, but then doesn't set up the boot sector. Is a command to run to do that depending on flavor of windows.
Doesn't come to mind at the top of my head.... Should be able to search it. Is also the fixmbr command.... just don't remember if they apply to Vista.

As for becoming a refurbisher...

Thanks

Did you repartition the disk as part of the installation process? At any rate you do not want to put Vista back on. Going the refurbisher route is the best bet, especially if you are doing any volume.

Ditto. MS Refurbisher is the way to go, easy to become one. Just picked up a free Dell running Vista today and am refurbishing it now with Windows 7. Already has dual core processor and 4GB of ram and I've just replaced the failed drive with a Crucial SSD.
