Hi
Has anybody found a real fix for the slow update process after installing windows 7 sp1 ?
It sticks on checking for updates for ages, got a laptop here that has been trying for 20 hrs now.
Regards
Glenn

@nlinecomputers has it been working for you with no issues lately?

I set up a test computer and also ran a VM on Virtual Box on my machine. Rollups installed just fine. WSUS didn't find anymore updates. Running Microsoft Updates I let it run for a couple hours and nothing. Checking installed updates everything was there.

You must install the latest WSUS update or it will hang. That is a critical step. But I've only done it twice. I make and keep images upto date. I don't install from Media unless for some weird reason my image doesn't work or I don't have an image. I've not kept up with 32bit images for example as I don't need them.

Yeah I got the latest update a couple days ago for WSUS. I thought IE 11 was in the roll up but I was wrong. Gonna slip stream them to have this handy.

I've had the exact same problem with updates hanging. It got to the point where I would dread a new install because I knew the updates would take forever. I have just spent two days trying to get the updates through but no luck. I have just installed WSUS update KB3138612 and after 5 minutes the updates have begun.

Many Thanks.

This is what I do now on Win 7.

1. Install Win 7 with SP1
2. Install April 2015 Service Stack KB3020369
3. Install Rollup KB3125574
4. Install WSUS update KB3138612
5. Install IE11
6 Setup Microsoft Update
7. Run Microsoft Update
Explain what you mean for step # 6 please.

I just had one heck of a time getting one of my freshly installs to do updates. I finally did something similar to what you have listed above and now it is doing updates correctly - in other words not making me wonder if anything is going on. ;)

I take it as set the update options such as update automatically, download but not install, etc.

Micorosoft supposedly released a patch to fix the Windows Updates issue. You'll first need to install the June 2016 roll-up kb3161608, then get KB3161647.

Thanks going to give that a shot because the Roll ups weren't working for me. I was having to get the stuff with WSUS.

I install the April 2015 AND the 2016 rollups then the other file (KB3161647.) Then the updates start working again. Still it takes forever to find and install updates - even if you have a fast connection to the Internet.

I still believe that the problem is on Mickey$oft's end. (And I believe it is intentional.) They are pushing Windoze 10 so hard that anything below 10 is being pushed aside and / or delayed - as is the case with the updates to Windows 7 systems.

After doing even more research on all of this, I've come to find that not much of anything really works very well. Even after trying the different combinations of files I still can't always get a computer to run its updates. For instance I have a Dell Latitude E6510 that is updating (it appears) without any problems by using this combo (in this order):

KB3020369 - April 2015 Service Stack
KB2670838 - Platform Update
KB3125574 - April 2016 Service Stack - this is a good-sized file and will take some time to install.

Install each in order as above (with the unit connected to the Internet), restart the computer after each install before proceeding to the next update / file.

So the Dell is working great - taking all three of these updates without any problems.

But I have an HP Workstation that I'm attempting to do this very same process with. (I might mention that both of these computers have had a fresh load of Windows 7 64-bit today.) The HP is NOT taking the updates - for some strange reason. I have shutdown the HP and have restarted it a couple of times but it has made no difference.

So what gives I wonder? Other than I truly believe that Mickey$oft is really attempting to discourage anyone from using Windows 7. Sorry to tell you M$, but most people around here don't wish to make the upgrade to W10.

It is ridiculous, I have tried many of the updates recommended to get around this, still several machines take days. It is to the point I put them on remote even though they are sitting in my shop and check them before I go to bed and before I drive to the shop.

I have had better luck with reloads doing some of the recommended updates plus offline updater. I can get updates done in about 4 hours. They key is to make sure you don't plug it into an internet connection until all the offline updates are done.

UPDATE - I generally use "ninite.com" to get the programs that we install for the end user (our standard software installs) and since the HP wasn't finding any of the above updates I just went ahead and downloaded / installed the programs / applications we add. Then I restarted the computer, updated the A-V software and tried the updates again - WHA-LAH! They are now installing. But I still have my fingers crossed.

I've been wanking around with this as well. Dusted off a W7 Home Prem machine that has not been on since 11/2014. Of course updates hang. One suggestion by @River Valley Computer in this thread - https://www.technibble.com/forums/threads/windows-7-updates.69654/#post-546604 - has proved invaluable. Make sure the computer is not connected to the Internet and the downloaded installations run much quicker.

Edit: The below are the kb's I installed and their order. After the last one Update started behaving normally. Another problem I had was, for some reason, when searching and downloading I was getting pointed to the x86 instead of x64 files. Maybe because the box is a bottom dollar Lenovo.

kb2775511
kb3020369
kb3138612
kb3172605
