Also since each card is independent they don't all need to be the same cards or from the same manufacturer I assume.
Nope. You can generally mix and match, although you may occasionally have compatibility issues. For example, we found the Aorus Graphics Engine software was crashing on one rig because of another card that was in there (I forget which). There was still a mix of cards in the rig afterwards; we just removed the problem card and put it in a different rig.

I will be going for a minimal diversity and will probably be installing drivers only but mostly will need to diversify as to fit in 4 cards w/o modifications I can only do 2x Double Slot and 2x Single Slot cards. The other current issue is availability of budget friendly options as they seem to be disappearing withing days.

For some cards drivers only may not work. There is still some software that is not in the drivers from what I can tell.

If you are just talking about extra utilities that are shipped, yeah that's cool to skip say GeForce Experience or AMD Gaming Center. But the rest of the utilities if not mistaken include CUDA SDK, OpenCL code etc. I had a few cards complain if I for example used SDI to install drivers and not the full package.

Thought I'd play around with tweaking the settings on my GPU tonight. I've never done this, and it's obvious I have A LOT to learn.

I'd like to get the power consumption of the GTX 1080 Ti down a bit from the current 250W it's burning through. I installed Afterburner and modified a file to allow me to unlock the Core Voltage options.

It appears I can only INCREASE the voltage. I watched some videos where I think they were using older versions of Afterburner, but they were able to increase or decrease voltage I think. Would I decrease Power Limit to get there?

As I said, I have a lot to learn about this.

OK, getting somewhere now...

Got EVGA's utility https://eu.evga.com/precision/ It has a slider that allows me to reduce or increase voltage. Played with it a bit and saw some results. Decreased it from 100% to 90%, watts on the Kill-o-Watt dropped from 315 to 285. I didn't watch clock speed or do anything scientific, and I quickly put it back, because, again, I don't know what the hell I'm doing :D

Like you, tweaking high-end graphics cards is new territory for me. I've never been a gamer, nor do I do residential work, so mining is really my first contact with more powerful GPUs. I'm still just getting started with the Nvidia cards but, what I found with the AMD cards, through lots of trial and error, is that the only real beneficial adjustment to make is to reduce the GPU clock speed by about 15-20%. All other adjustment either had no beneficial effect, reduced performance, increased power consumption or made the card unstable.

I'm still yet to confirm the best settings for the Nvidia cards but for now I've been using this info as a starting point:

I am not familiar with that software @Moltuae mentioned but it sounds like added software instead of part of the required components.

Hmmm. He was getting 87C and tweaked down to 72C. My card running stock is 43C at 99% load running Nicehash.
How many mBTC is that earning you presently?

I'm finding that I can make the cards work more efficiently (in terms of mBTC/W) by reducing the power but it's a compromise. There comes a point where, above a certain power threshold, there's less of an increase in earnings BUT it's still an increase (even if you do need to use another 100W per card). So, if you're using the rig as a heater, or electricity costs aren't a factor, it may make more sense to run at a higher power.

It's a little chilly in my workshop today, so I turned the power and the fans up full :D

While it's not the most efficient mining rig, it's still making me money, unlike the electric fan heater I would normally use. :)

Looks about the same, yeah.

Which card did you get out of interest?

I bought two of these (below). Partly because they were cheaper than most other 1080 Ti cards but also because I prefer cards of this design. Cards with larger/multiple fans tend to throw the heat out in all directions, whereas these have a very directional airflow, which is better for heating a room but it also helps keep the heat away from the adjacent cards.

Tonight's project:

2_1080_Ti_and_1_1060.png

Got the GPU risers today. Installed my GTX 1060 card and installed another (temporary, long story) GTX 1080 Ti. So I've got three GPUs in my desktop PC right now.

Installed the 1060 first. Not too scary. After that ran a while I put the other 1080 Ti. More scary powering that thing on. First time I powered it on with the 1080 Ti it look like it was going to POST no problem, then thud... It powered off. Oh crap I think! I grab the power cord thinking I might yank it from the PSU before I fry anything else. But, then, it powers back on seemingly on it's own. I don't think it was loose or that I pushed it in farther. Maybe the BIOS was recognizing that a new, 3rd card was installed then had to reset. I hope.

Anyway, after that it powered up and ran fine. I shut it down and unplugged to connect it to the Kill a Watt. Been fine ever since.

I dialed back the power to 85% on the two big cards. Brought measured wattage from around 700 to 600 at the plug.

Great work! :)

Looks about as tidy as most of my own experimental rigs :D

I think the mining ethos is that if it's all neat and tidy, you're doing it wrong. The right way is to have cables everywhere and lots of expensive graphics cards hanging precariously close to other components. After a few quick inspections to confirm everything is properly connected (and insulated, where necessary, using bits of card/paper), you should nervously flick the switch, keeping your finger on it for the first 30 seconds. If after that time, there were no unexpected pops/bangs/smoke, you're good to go.

I find it difficult to make a neat and tidy rig, even using the purpose-built mining frames, so I'm presently trying to design my own. I just ordered another 2 GTX 1080 Ti cards last night to go with the two I already have. I think I've found a good way of mounting them securely and I'm planning to make a custom frame from 20mm aluminium extrusion that will hold all the cards and other components. I'll post pictures and details if all goes to plan.

Good find with the link and video!

Another good reason (and reminder) NOT to hold Bitcoin (or any other large amounts of digital currency) on an exchange.

What To Do With Bitcoin Ahead Of SegWit Activation
Article Link: https://cointelegraph.com/news/what-to-do-with-bitcoin-ahead-of-segwit-activation

Just to clarify the situation: If a hard fork occurs and you have the private keys to your funds, you will own the same amount of Bitcoin on both blockchains. If the private key to your funds belongs to an exchange, the exchange will be in control of the outcome.

I added this link for UK extrusions to an earlier post. The T-slotting on the extrsusions makes configurations and adjustments instant. -

Thanks Diggs. I had stumbled on that website myself, then I found one of my usual component suppliers, RS Components, had 1 Metre lengths in stock at a good price, so I ordered 10 lengths (which arrived today):
http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/products/8508476/

I already had some 20mm aluminium extrusion and various fixings. What I didn't realise is that there are two different profile standards. The extrusion and all the fixings I already have appear to have a 6mm slot, whereas the lengths that arrived today have a 5mm slot, which I'm having a difficult time finding fixings for (at a reasonable price at least). Think I might try to find some square nuts that fit in the slot instead ....
