During the development I studied the optimial tone, the optimal length and the optimial frequency. I also spent a lot of time experimenting with optimal layouts (especially for the print version. What fonts are best for reading in print, what layouts, how does it look in black and white etc..).
As someone with a site like Technibble and a large readership/subscribership, I have this kind of data because I optimize Technibble content in the same way and have been doing it since 2006
