Fab's AutoBackup 6 Pro - a must have tool for techs

Hello,
I have released a new version some fixes (good!) and an item removal (not good!).

Software : Fab's AutoBackup 6 Pro
Version : 6.8.1.567
Date : 03/16/2017

Fixed :
- After restoring files to a user profile, going back to users selection and selecting another user, files were still restored to the previously selected user profile.

Removed :
- Microsoft Edge favorites. They are now stored in a database that cannot be saved from a user profile and restored to another. This feature did not work anymore since Microsoft released Windows 10 anniversary update. I got that feedback quite lately, showing that this feature was not so much used anyway.

As usual, you can use the updater tool to download this release or get it from your store's account.

Eh, I think I paid $80 for it as a trial thing back when Microsoft was trying to make a go of it, and I got a year of Office365 bundled with it, so it worked out OK on that point.

I actually like the "live tiles" and resizable icons aspect of it, but some of the security restrictions made it not viable and the lack of apps (or lack of quality in existing ones) pretty much killed it. I'm still using it some as an ebook reader whose battery life I don't need to care about.

We use Fab's for every workstation replacement. We carry 128GB USB 3.0 flash drives for this purpose. My problem was that we would end up carrying around their data on our thumb drives which presents a security risk for us if they are lost. I decided to test the Startech encrypted enclosures with an SSD drive. We haven't used them much but used it today. We left one at a client site as we new they would have a huge user profile. Turns out it was 95GB which historically will take us hours to backup.

With this set-up it took 14 minutes to perform the backup. Insane speeds compared to using flash drivers or rotational hard drives. I'll be buying more and make sure we all carry them around. That being said, my technician said it kept disconnecting during restore which I am testing now. Thankfully Fab's has an option not to copy any existing files which allowed us to finish without recopying every time.

Hi,
a new Fab's AutoBackup 6 version has just been released:

Version : 6.8.2.30731
Date : 04/11/2017

Added :
- When possible, computer serial number, system manufacturer, system model, base board manufacturer and base board model are now added to the installed software list's header.
- When backing up or transferring a user profile linked to a Microsoft ID, it can be useful to save it somewhere in order to remake the link after a restore/transfer job. When such account is detected, the ID is added to the backup/transfer log. IE: YYYY-MM-DD - HH:MM:SS - Processing : UserName (Associated Microsoft ID : microsoftid@domain.com)..

Removed :
- HTML reports (Logs printers list, installed software list) colors cannot be changed anymore in order to make them easier to read for everyone, no matter the program's branding options. Only text branding remains in these reports.
- Current user profile auto-select at restore when there are more than one user profile on the computer. Now, the user must select the target profile before being able to click the "next" button. This should prevent user from restoring data to a wrong user profile by mistake.

Fixed:
- On a very few computers, Outlook PST/OST files were not restored. The problem came from the customized check list boxes used in the GUI. Their states were ignored, no matter if the Outlook files was selected or not. All of them have been replaced with more classic components and the problem went away.

This! Got missed a few times.

Many thanks!

@fabs Does your program back up Outlook email settings on a non bootable hard drive? In other words, does the computer need to be able to boot to Windows to back up the Outlook email settings (username, password, ports, server settings, etc.)? Does it support backing up the emails and settings from the new Windows 10 Mail app?

It can do all of this for Outlook settings except passwords.
Windows 10 Mail app is not supported: it uses a database that only works on the current user profile. When restored onto a new machine or user profile, the app does not work anymore, so, I doubt it will even be supported.
The same thing happened to the Edge's favorites and finally, I removed the feature.

...and one more reason not to embrace Edge. Haven't even seen Win10 Mail being used yet.

Regardless whether or not they can be restored, it would be nice if you could extract the email address and password from Outlook and the Windows 10 Mail app and put them in a .txt file or something in the main backup directory so they can be inputted manually after a fresh install. Same thing with a list of Edge favorites (though with Edge, it would be nice if it exported to an HTML file so the links can be clicked on). It may be inconvenient, but it's better than not having them at all. Like it or not, the apps in Windows 10 are becoming more and more popular. I'm encountering tons of people using the Mail app and they couldn't remember their passwords if their life depended on it. Same thing with Outlook. They set up Outlook YEARS ago (in some cases, 10+ years ago!) and haven't entered their password's since.

Microsoft is going to continue pushing their apps, so more and more people are going to use them. I feel like an idiot not being able to help my clients with the Windows 10 Mail app.

The fact is that it is not so simple to do. I personally do not have the skills to do something like that and NirSoft MailPassView can only do it from the current user profile or providing the profile's logon password, so, this is a no no.
