Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro - a must have tool for techs

Fabs may not be able to build it in, but it looks like we could make an extra step and use either of the programs before and after. A quick glance of DesktopOK's web page gives me the idea that they save the icon positions in a folder %APPDATA%/DesktopOK

In my early days, I took a picture of the desktop and tried to recreate the icons afterwards ... but it took a lot of time for minimal return.

Today, I create a folder on the desktop called "Saved Desk Top Items" and copy into it Fab's backed up desktop for the user and Public profile. I explain to the customer that the folder contains everything he used to have and all he has to do is move the desired item(s) onto his new desktop (which is really clean). This also allows the customer to review what was previously on their desktop and whether they still need it -- amazing how many items they had that they didn't know about.

Fabs is a terrific tool, but I wouldn't use a desktop restore.

Fabs is paid software. So he would get paid for using it or the code in Fabs.

Fabs itself is paid software. If you're not charging for something "sent with" (and of course I'd get permission from the copyright holder, explicitly, first) it would not seem to violate the EULA.

I wasn't thinking about integrating functionality into Fabs, but just having it as part of a collection of freebies that came along with. It's hair-splitting, I know, but hair-splitting of a sort I've seen before.

Addendum: I've actually written to the folks who own ReIcon asking if it could be included as a free utility in a package with paid software provided it's kept separate and it's clearly stated that there is no charge for it.

If their tool only works for current logged in user, this will just be a big no no for me. I've done that in the past with Nirsoft password tools and I still don't like this integration as it's what I call "half working features". I don't want to do that again for desktop icons layout off that's the same case here. I only want rock solid stuff that can work in any configuration for Fab's, no matter if source profile is logged on or offline. It must also work for computers migrations and I'm not convinced at all so far

I would never even think of trying to tell you what is or is not acceptable to you for your purposes. But I will still report back on what the response is about being able to bundle this software with other software that is being sold as far as that being permitted, or forbidden, by the ReIcon EULA if I get a final answer.

Can I ask if this will allow the new machine to have access to previously connected network printers?

I've not purchased your program, but I have a few business clients who have bought new machines and i've had to remote in afterwards to get their printer connected (coronavirus limitations because I will not visit them).

I have a business client dropping off his new laptop along with his existing one tomorrow, I spend hours on these types of jobs making sure everything comes across, including mapped drives etc. Does all of this happen automatically? I don't really want to spend the cash if I still have to remote in afterwards to get his printer connected, it's still time and time is money.

Mapped network drives will follow.

If you absolutely need it to reinstall network printers, then thanks but the product you are looking for. All it will do it to export a list of installed printers, their ports and the driver they use but it will not reinstall them for you.

Thank you for responding honestly. I think until these things are added I shall have to pass. Most techs are working for businesses who are dealing with networked printers and mapped drives. I would happily pay alot more for your program if these were included and I could just click a button and leave it do it's thing. Until then I shall do it all manually.

Fab's has to be able to work on an offline drive. Many things have to be done on a booted computer to work correctly so they are not part of Fab's. I do not know if this task can be done offline.

From what I've read there's a fair bit of nirsoft software which requires a booted love environment.

Does this work with Windows XP? I've got an old dead PC in my shop right now that I think is on XP. I'm going to sell them a refurbished Windows 10 PC. Does fabs handle backing up / transferring from Windows XP?
