Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro - a must have tool for techs

Fab's has to be able to work on an offline drive. Many things have to be done on a booted computer to work correctly so they are not part of Fab's. I do not know if this task can be done offline.

From what I've read there's a fair bit of nirsoft software which requires a booted love environment.

Does this work with Windows XP? I've got an old dead PC in my shop right now that I think is on XP. I'm going to sell them a refurbished Windows 10 PC. Does fabs handle backing up / transferring from Windows XP?

New topic... I used Fab's (latest update) to migrate a customer's Win 7 to a new Win 10 machine. One of the installed programs was QuickBooks. Installed QuickBooks on the new machine and it started, but could not find the company files! Went back to the old machine to see where they were located, and found that the user put them in the user name directory (i.e. c:\users\joe ) . So this is kinda sorta a user error as they (aesthetically, at least) should be in their own directory, but Fab's did not copy them! So, is this a defect in Fab's Autobackup? I pulled the drive to run Fab's as the Win 7 system was barely running and I did not want to spend time fixing it when I can just grab what I need offline. Also, the drive had a few bad sectors, which show up when doing a backup, but no errors from Fab's during it's run.

P.S. Yes, I know I can specify additional files / folders to copy, but my assumption has always been the Fab's will grab anything relevant in the user's profile.

QuickBooks files are handled as public data and not files that belong to a user profile. Fabs looks for them a their default location an nowhere else. This is why they did not get copied. That was not a fabs malfunction

Not related to QuickBooks specifically, but some programs (and some clients) have a tendency to store data in random folders under C:\Users\<username> or C:\, and while it's possible to track these down and add them individually it would be nice to have a "User is a disorganised slob - copy it all" option to make sure that nothing's lost, even if it's in a weird place. You might be able to find a better name for it.

The goal would be to copy anything that's not in a well-known folder (\Windows, \Program Files, and so on) on the off-chance that it's something really important that the user tucked away in a strange place for safe keeping.

Just a thought!

Should have been installed in the default QuickBooks location to begin with.

Only if it is in the default location.

No, it is not.

That is why I always look thru the root of the c drive and the users folder to see if there are any non default folders created there.

Yeah I get why you might not view this as a defect... but... the files are / were in the user folder (C:\Users\Joe) so I was expecting them to be copied, just like you copy every file under C:\Users\Joe\Documents whether or not they are in a folder under Documents. If you disagree that these files need to be included automatically, that's OK. I will look for them from here on in. Love your product and just want to make it better.

I've noticed lately that after using Fabs from a USB drive, Windows won't eject the drive. Safely Remove Hardware reports the drive is still in use.

This is running a backup or restore, program and data are both on a portable USB HDD, and after exiting Fabs. After 3 or 4 attempts the eject still fails. I'm not sure if this is a Windows or Fabs issue.

When that happens to me, I modify Recycle bin properties to not move files from the drive letters of the source drive. After a minute or so, I can usually safely remove the device. If not, I prefer to restart the PC than risk losing data.

Looks like a windows problem so.

Hello,
Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro and Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office V7.5.0.3327 have just been released.

Here is the change log for both versions:

Added:
- Support for installed drivers.
- MailBird email client data is now handled.

Fixed:
- In rare cases (1 known case so far), target public downloads path could not be detected and could trigger a built in security feature preventing source file from being overwritten by itself and get destroyed in restore or transfer mode.
- Updater tool did not overwrite old translation files.
Grab it from your orders history's details on the shop's website at https://store.fpnet.fr/account.php?language=en or using the bundled updater tool (click the "Download Fab's AutoBackup 7.X" link within the program and get the updated files).
