Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro - a must have tool for techs

Hey Fabs, I keep getting caught out by the antivirus blocking the Nirsoft tools. I know I'm supposed to disable that when running the backup and restore but sometimes I forget. When I come back after the restore is finished I see the errors where the Nirsoft tools were blocked. Today when the restore gave errors I disabled Defender and ran it again using the Skip option and that seemed to be ok. I wonder if it makes sense to have it pause with a prompt when copying or running those tools gives an error.

Regarding the update error reported by @Porthos, I'm getting it now on the update of main exe, twice in a row. Command line builder unticked.

The progress indicator seems to indicate the download is working fine, gets to Done, then the error.

In fact, the updater does a checksum control at the end if every download. If sum is not the expected one, it considers the file as corrupted and downloads it again until it succeeds or reach 5 checksum control failures. That message appears then. If download is fine, then something is preventing updater from getting checksum. Anti-malware maybe?
Anyway, I must remove that feature. That looked like a good idea but obviously it's not as I can't prevent this. At least, I should add an option in ini file that turns checksum control off.

This. Having checksum control is a good thing. Maybe have it display a warning but not terminate the download.
Good idea. I'm currently changing it. It will still try to download each item 5 times (perhaps I should double hat number as well ?) but instead of just renaming the .old to .exe and showing that message before it closes, it will add a " - Failed" to the item and will try the next one. This way, checksum remains but that will not be that annoying and scary.
Unfortunately, that will be effective only for next (+1) update.

Note : if any of you has a better idea about that, feel free to share it ;)

The folders I keep it in are excluded from Defender and Malwarebytes. I also tried it with Malwarebytes fully turned off.
Then, just improving that checksum feature will not work for you. It looks like you'll need a way to disable it completely

It's still happening every time for me on the main exe. I've also tried it with antivirus and firewall disabled (same result).

@fabs would you like me to send you a zipped copy of my AutoBackupPro folder for testing? What email address?

So, I'm also adding a setting to put in the ini file :

[CONFIG]
DontCheckDownloads=1

With this value, the updater will keep downloaded files just like previous versions did with no stop and no checksum control.
Even if this will not work until next update (+1), this can already be added now to your ini file so you'll be ready. Sorry for this inconvenience, I could not see that coming.

Hello,
Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro and Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office V7.4.0.3141 have just been released.

Here is the change log for both versions:

Added:
- Date format used for backup folder was current system short date format. This could be disturbing for many IT users. Now, it's back to YYYY-MM-DD by default but still can be overridden to set the desired date format in the autobackup.ini file. For example, to use something like YYYY-DD-MM, create a "ShortDateFormat" (without quotes) value under [CONFIG] section and set it to YYYY\DD\MM. This should look like "ShortDateFormat=YYYY\DD\MM" (still without quotes).
- If the program is branded with a company name and this name can be used in a file name, it's now put at the beginning of every html report like installed software, printers and logs.

Fixed:
- Updater tool's way to deal with corrupted downloads has been improved. Instead of stopping the entire download process upon fifth try, it will mark current item as failed (and rename its old version from .old to .exe so program will remain functional) and process next one.
- It's now possible to turn off updater tool checksum control feature for downloaded files. Add a "DontCheckDownloads" value under [CONFIG] section in autobackup.ini file and set its value to 1. This way, updater tool will not check downloaded files and will work like it did before this feature introduction.
- In some cases, Firefox (or any other Mozilla family products) profile could not be used upon restore/transfer.
- Files integrity check, folders dates keeping and VSS use parameters could be ignored when performing backup in command line mode.
Grab it from your orders history's details on the shop's website at https://store.fpnet.fr/account.php?language=en or using the bundled updater tool (click the "Download Fab's AutoBackup 7.X" link within the program and get the updated files).

Feature Request: Restore desktop icon placement

Don't know if you already do this or not, or if it's been requested frequently, or if it's even possible....

Today I used Fab's to migrate a profile from one user to another on the same computer. I took a screenshot before and when I got to the new profile I referred to the screenshot and manually placed every icon in the same position it was on in the old profile.

For many users, this is a huge comfort. What happens now is that all the icons are restored to the desktop but they're in alphabetical or some other arrangement. It would be amazing if the icons could be in the same spot as before.

It's been asked a couple of times already. The fact is I've never found any reliable way to do that from a profile to another neither from a machine to another.

You could use DesktopOK and save the positions, then on new profile do a restore

Probably not.
