Forgive a non-humor observation: Just remember, people of any age are a very direct product of their parenting.
I was a graduate student from 1997 through 2000, starting back at age 35, and I was shocked then at the change in attitude that my 20-something classmates exhibited on all kinds of things, but particularly academic rigor (and the ability to be able to withstand it).
They didn't get that way by themselves, just as those of us of other groups did not become what we are by ourselves. Along the way there's plenty of blame to be shared for the situation we find ourselves in. (And that's not limited to this sphere, either).
