In the past I've tried some of the programs that claim to be able to take a PDF document and convert it to an editable Word document, but I haven't had too much luck with any of them. Is there a reliable way to do this?

Yeah, that's what I've kind of found out in the past. But so many people are searching for a way to do this, there are all kinds of search results that come up in Google - lots of opportunities for scammers and malware.

If you have word 2013, you can right click on the pdf and select "open with" word 2013 and it will covert it to word. Just tried it and it works pretty good.

Have you looked at any of the Open-Source pdf readers? You'd be surprised with what you can find with Open-Source.

Part of the problem (in my experience) has been that converters plop frame-based objects into the Word doc (depending on the source), so if you were expecting text flow-based, you're in for a disappointment. Presumably, you would be converting to Word to edit, though the results might be more than a bit unwieldy in that respect.

I have tried several of the open source PDF readers. Not really to convert PDF to Word, but just as an alternative to Adobe Reader. I seem to always come back to Adobe Reader. It's been a while since I used one of the open source ones, but I seem to recall that someone sent me a PDF that was password protected, and I think the only way you can get into one of those is to use the actual Adobe Reader. Haven't heard of Soda PDF before though.

I'm still using Word 2010 but I had not heard about Word 2013 being able to open PDFs and save as a Word file.

Yup Word 2013 carries the tradition. How successful it is in converting it into a useful file that Word can edit depends on the formatting done in the original PDF. Couple of weeks ago I took a PDF from the state DMV and whipped it up in Word for a bill of sale...worked fine. Sometimes it works great, other times, due to prior formatting...it's a little off....one of those "your mileage may vary" things. Always worth a try though..since you already have Word.
