I don't deal with this much, i still have some cassettes...but beside point a I have a customers computer, who's hard drive is about filled up with music files from his daughters downloads, she was behind him with tears in her eyes...she's been told they can't be moved and used they have to be deleted one song at a time and replaced one song at a time... From what I've been able to gather due to the record industries restrictions with music she can't just move the files to a different computer, the IPOD looks for the folder ITunes..she's told her dad (my customer) that you can't move the music or she'll lose it..but that doesn't pass the common sense test..so I'm gonna create another folder on a portable HD move the songs to a ITunes folder..she should still be able to listen to them on the portable eh? As long as the IPOD finds ITunes then it should be fine..anyone done this one before just doing a reality check before I let it go..

I haven't done this in a while but if memory serves me, these are the necessary steps to move the entire thing...

  1. Go to iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced Tab
  2. Click box that says "Keep iTunes Music Folder Organized"
  3. Click "OK".
  4. Wait for files to be copied to itunes folder.
  5. Go to \My Documents\My Music
  6. Move iTunes folder to spare drive.
  7. Go to iTunes > Edit > Preferences > Advanced Tab
  8. Click "Change" button and move location to itunes folder on spare drive.
  9. Open itunes and listen to tunes from new drive.
  10. right-click on a song and choose "Get Info". Down at the bottom of the window is the file location. As long as it says that it on the spare drive, you're set.

First of all is this a HDD replacement, moving to another computer, or just backing up the music?

If this is an Apple computer there are several different options available in any of these scenarios where the music should be just fine. If its a Windows machine I'm not to sure there, but I would look to see what the parent folder of the iTunes folder is and try to copy that whole folder or look into the option to deauthorize/authorize the iTunes library before moving it.

No not a replacement, just moving to portable drive to make room on the hard drive. Its windows all the way..

Just so you know this is not too difficult I moved my bosses library for him now it took me a whole day but thats beside the point. He has 790 GB 144,000+ files or 6.5 years of continuous playback.

Wow..did you feel some pressure with that much data and your boss all at the same time...ITunes right?

I just did the move I still have his files on my home PC, I needed more sotrage then was available at the office here. I am going to be deleting it all soon but I just do the move it wasn't the first time moving iTunes. I like iTunes for playback and management but it is not ideal in memory utilization and transfer rates when adding to the library. When you run his memory using for iTunes is about 150 MB but it works for him and he is using firewire for his external drive. I was consolidating his library to the single 1 TB drive from 2 500 GB USB drives and setting it all up on a newer faster laptop.

I would recommend to anyone that has a huge database of music (anything in excess of 50GB) to use MediaMonkey.

I dropped iTunes a few years ago for MediaMonkey and haven't looked back since. And v4.0 is coming around soon which will bring support for video.

I don't think his boss would be so easily convinced using it for so long, would he Blue...now this is funny and embarrassing but what the f++:D..I've never used an IPOD in my life, don't know why, growing up never bought a cd I guess I just got turned off when you like one song and its 15.00:eek:...but anyway I got this 1GB iPOD shuffle...you ever seen the movie Zoolander with his little phone? well this is about that size, I laugh just looking at it, but it holds 250 songs, and that 250 more songs than I've ever owned...I'll give MediaMonkey a try, I assume its compatible with Apple and Windows..
