Learn from my fail!

Well, ultimately I dodged the bullet on this one. When I pressed for a copy of his purchase receipt, it turned out that a buddy of his had given him the machine! I said I would forgive the invoice for my attempt and we parted ways. Last week he contacted me again about upgrading another machine, and I sent him the list of prerequisites (I would need to see it powered on and working before I took the machine, I would have to do the job here on the bench, and I would do full hardware testing before I started (which I do anyway, but as long as I was listing things....). I also was clear that the price was variable depending on any problems found and the amount of data.

Haven't heard back from him yet - a good thing as far as I'm concerned.

Did business with a lawyer previously. No more. Also as far as Churches, and I'm very much a Church going person, unfortunately, you have to feel things out. I did work at a Church one time, got paid no problem. I can't remember the exact issue, but ended up having to go back out for something else. Spent I think 1-2 hours there. Handed the secretary the bill for my time, and since I'd worked on it previously, they didn't feel obligated to pay me anything saying something to the effect of they would have to ask the pastor or something. I basically told them not to worry about it. I held my tongue, but I felt like saying something to the effect of how good of a witness were they being by ripping people off. I mean you call someone to help you with things, and then expect not to pay anything because I worked on something for them previously. Don't think so.

I absolutely hate this. You fix one thing and suddenly are responsible for any IT issue that occurs for the next 6 months.

Once had a client call up insisting our engineer return to her house because she had a new PC installed and now the mouse wasn't working properly (scroll wheel was moving around at random).

- It was installed 3 weeks prior to her calling up.
- The mouse only stopped working the day she called up.
- We didn't even supply the mouse.
