Have you tried disk drill?I haven't played with deleted file recovery from APFS yet. It is possible that it might be an improvement, but Apple usually makes things worse, not better for recovery.
Have you had good luck on deleted files or disk formats where the file structure is gone?Disk drill will get you everything unless the disk is encrypted.
