Microsoft is providing free upgrade to Windows 10 .... even for pirated OS

Has anyone seen any info on when Windows 10 will be available in the Action Pack? I can't recall how far in advance Vista and 7 were available. I thought it was around the time of OEM release which is typically a month.

I'm concerned about this myself. Also, I was a little unnerved today by the way it said it would just download the installer on my system and be ready to go when I thought it convenient, but um, I don't really want Microsoft automatically downloading installers on my system, especially something as huge as a new OS.

This morning I uninstalled the KB Update and then hid the update to not notify me again on my personal machine. Happy with Windows 7 Pro on it. I will be installing it on my test machine though.

Even better, this Home version of Win 10 automatically installs updates, without the ability to wait or schedule when it updates.
It just gets better.

Besides the free upgrades, new computers purchased with the Home version preinstalled will be tied to the Current Branch upgrade as well.

I will be recommending my clients buy new systems with the Pro version. I have some small clients that seem to buy computers from retail outlets. Will Best Buy or Staples even sell systems with the Pro version?

It's shame about Windows Media Center not being in Windows 10. I think they're trying to push people to buy Xbox One as a media center instead of a Windows machine.

Who the heck used it? They aren't pushing anybody to Xbox. Xbox is what normal people use. Only geeks want to turn there PC into an entertainment center.

I haven't used Windows Media Center in awhile. Usually I will go with iTunes in my case but VLC is another one which is what Microsoft is recommending at the moment.

It's a licencing problem. It cost Microsoft something like $30-$40/copy of windows to include DVD support out of the box.

Not like we can't just install VLC on everyone's systems to fix that right quick, but that's why Microsoft stopped it.

And yet VLC can do the same for free?

Yes, because they wrote the software.

Microsoft didn't - they licences from someone else.
Which in bulk they could license at pennies per unit and still make lots of money for the code authors. It isn't licensing that is an issue. It GLOBAL licensing that is the issue and the nightmare of having a different version for every tradezone in the world. That or pay each tradezone for every copy made. Thus the dollar amounts you mentioned. And yet they could get better deals if they wanted they have that kind of marketing power, but again WHO USED IT? If the demand really was that high for the product Microsoft would have gotten the better deal.

Oh I'm sure they would have. The only people that really used it were people who purchased the media center versions of XP back when HP thought that would be a good idea.

In the end, there were too many alternative solutions and not enough people using what was built in.

Besides, does your laptop even have a DVD tray? Most people are using iTunes or ...less legal means ... to download and use digital copies of media. When that hit the software they were paying for was pretty much useless.

That's going to be interesting with some of my village clients who have very slow internet. So Microsoft will be hogging all the bandwidth when the client wants to use the computer? Let's hope the updates aren't too big ;)

I have a client or 2 who actually used Media Center as their cable box basically. They seemed to like it.
I was just thinking about doing just that. We cancelled our satellite service a couple days ago and I saw a YouTube video where someone was integrating Plex/Hulu/Netflix with MediaCenter. I am going to give this a whirl. Just on a Win7 box. Thinking of getting a NUC to replace the Raspberry Pi that was currently a Plex only client.
