Geez. I would take that laptop on. "No power" "No light" problems are the easiest to fix.
As for the processor socket / processor with compound on it - Remove processor support from motherboard, Use lighter fluid to clean out. Same for processor. I have done this before when a client tried to put his own on. A very soft tooth brushed dragged over the bottom of the processor helps. Not too hard though. Have to be careful.
