OK, a bit hyperbolic on the title... but Apple is cutting production on all 3 of their X models by 1/3 and "Apple shocked investors with surprisingly low demand numbers."

For the first time ever, Apple is ceasing the 3-times-per-year public disclosure of unit sales for its devices.

If we recall, iPhone 7 production was cut early in its life, iPhone 8's production was cut in half as well as the iPhone X - also cut in half from 40mil to 20mil units. Now, three more phones are getting cut due to poor sales.
I'm seeing a trend here. At the time of writing, these phones have been out for less than 55 days and it's right before the Christmas shopping season! Hmm.

Apple's iOS global market share for Q2 '18 is 11.9% globally, down from 14.1% Q1 '18.

The current low is higher than only two point in history, once in Q3 2016 and also when the iPhone was first released in 2009.

The new iPhones without a button and a huge ugly notch are just stupid. I wouldn't buy one if it were 1/2 the price of the iPhone 8. I personally use an iPhone 6s+, iPhone 7+, and an iPhone 8+. I have no plans of ever upgrading so long as Apple continues this horrible trend of giving users less while demanding even more insane prices for crap products. Same thing with their Macbook Pro's. No magsafe adapters and only 2 USB-C ports that nobody uses? Forget it. Maybe on a $150 Chromebook, but not on a $1,500+ Macbook. And what about those keyboards? I'd rather type on an iPad screen. You get about the same tactile response. I've never been a huge Apple fan but they went from overpriced luxury products to ripoff products banking on their popularity while sh*tting on their customers at EVERY opportunity. And I'm not even TALKING about repairability here. That deserves its own rant.

The notch thing is idiotic, I'll never get a phone that has that crap on the screen and not having the home button on an iOS device is cumbersome.. My Samsung S8+ without a menu button is wonderful. But the OS is not a pain to navigate without it.

The only people bothered by the notch are the ones who don't have one.

I've been using an iPhone X for over a year and the only time I think about the notch is when I hear about other non-owners complain about it. Also don't miss the home button at all.

I owned an iPhone X for a while. What a horrible device that was. Who wants to memorize gestures? Not me. I went back to my iPhone 8.

I looked at the X back when I upgraded my personal iPhone. Took a pass. Beyond the ridiculous price I did not want the face recognition. Yet another piece of PII that's floating around on their servers.

On their market share? Apple has never pursued the low priced market segment. Looking at the average they've been flat, which I'm sure is fine with them. I'd be thrilled to have 15% market share at their profit margins. I'd think the real profit margin, ignoring accounting games, must be in the 60-70% range.

But I'm really getting tired of their never ending efforts to lock up every aspect of their ecosystem. The way they administer their spare parts program makes them one of the worst e-waste generators around in my book. Maybe not in total volume but certainly as a percentage of their products sold, especially with traditional computers.

Face ID data doesn’t leave your device and is never backed up to iCloud or anywhere else. Only in the case that you wish to provide Face ID diagnostic data to AppleCare for support will this information be transferred from your device. And even in this case, data isn’t automatically sent to Apple; you can first review and approve the diagnostic data before it’s sent.

Privacy concerns aside, I don't want to have to stare directly at my phone to unlock it. What a pain in the a$$! I don't even lock my phone. I just hit the home button and I'm in. I'm not 5 years old and I'm not stupid. I've never lost a phone (or anything!) in public and I never will.

Love my iPhone X so that's why I haven't bothered to upgrade this year.
Will wait another year or two.
Don't miss the Home button at all and don't notice the notch either.
I upgraded from an iPhone 7 Plus.

I have the option for 'Require Attention for Face ID' disabled so I don't have to stare directly at the screen for it to unlock.
It didn't work for me due to my lazy eye, as it didn't think I was looking at it! :D

Agreed! I forgot about the notch, to be honest.

I believe Apple has the notch due to it housing many sensors

As does everyone else. That black part at the top, notch -or full strip was always for housing the sensors. Before notch screens, they were simply "smaller" screens with a full strip at the top. Smaller meaning that you get don't get two "wings" on either side of the sensors. Some people think that it is as if the sensors are covering up an otherwise square screen.

The "Essential Phone" - An Android phone company was the first with the notch:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_Phone

Now, with the ability to implement shaped displays, manufacturers have the ability to use as much screen real estate as possible.

So, when the question is asked "why are so many companies now making phones that have them?"

The answer is, "Because it's the newest screen tech shown and marketed to many companies at CES."

Apple Scrambles to Boost iPhone Sales as Analysts and Markets Sour
The discounts come through aggressive buyback terms for older iPhones. A source described the activities as a “fire drill” and a potentially tacit admission that sales have been falling. They include an iPhone XR price of $449, $300 less than the retail price, with the trade-in of an iPhone 7.

Apple has lost 20% of its market value since early October.
