There's a lot of talk in the first computer thread, and now I'm curious to see what people are using these days. I find that computer technicians either have an amazing new computer, or an old Frankenstein that they just keep swapping parts in to keep it going. So which are you?

I'll start. I currently use three computers.

My pride and joy I just built a month ago.

• Full tower case
• Intel i7-860
• 4GB DDR3
• AMD Radeon 5770
• Dual 1TB in RAID for OS drive
• Single 2TB drive for storage (just backups for now)
• Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

When it starts to show it's age, I'm going to bump it up to 8gb or 16gb RAM, and CrossFire in another Radeon 5770. I don't think it'll be for awhile though. What they say about these i7s are true, this processor will blow your socks off.


The bedroom PC is still the computer that gets the most usage. It's an Acer 7720 laptop that's sort of been converted into a desktop. I have it hooked up to a 22" Gateway monitor and have a keyboard and mouse attached. The actual laptop is behind the desk against the wall.

And finally, a netbook I use when I'm out of the house. It's an Asus EeePC 900A that I got off Woot for $180 a few months ago. It was a crappy model but I've upgraded it into something decent.

• 2GB DDR2 (came with 1GB)
• 16GB high performance SSD (came with 4GB super slow one)
• Windows 7 Professional 32-bit (came with linux)

I have a lot of computers but my main box is a Q6600 cooled by a Chilly1 Single Stage, 2xHD4870's, 2GB DDR3, 700W OCZ GameXtream, 100GB(OS) and 500GB(data). It is way past time to upgrade though so this system will become a secondary and I will be going to a whole new system.

I built a desktop in November 2007, so it's pretty outdated by now, and I just did the basic stuff:

Raidmax tower case w/PSU
Intel 2.3 Ghz dual core CPU w/ Intel MB & 2GB Patriot RAM stick
Seagate 500 GB HDD
LG Super Multi CD/DVD drive (because I had craploads of CD-R's and wanted to make sure I could get the info off them)
Cheap floppy drive for booting off DOS if needed
Windows Vista Home Premium, which I still use despite drawbacks because I have no money for 7
The Raidmax case came with a mouse and KB, I still use the mouse but the KB went bye bye fast, and was replaced with standard Microsoft KB

I originally had bought a cheap Asus MB to use (Frys had it on sale), but as I'd never seen a dual core heat sink before I installed the heat sink with the plastic leg protectors still on it, so it didn't seal and the board blew when I turned it on. It's just as well, since I took it to a guy with more knowledge than me and he sold me an Intel board.

My mom went on vacation to Spain in 2006 and I told her to bring me back a cool European portable radio. I ended up with computer speakers instead. So that's what I use for speakers. They're from Portugal (she did a little cross border shopping) and called "Ante". They actually work quite well for 12 euros. The volume has two levels: "off" and "full blast". "Full blast" isn't THAT loud, though. Anywhere else on the volume knob you just get unintelligible sound.

How does them RAM go? from the specs the CL is really high and from friends of mine that have DDR3 say that it's slow for gaming etc

Its fast offers massive amount of bandwidth but not the fastest for gaming... Its the Corsair Dominator range and you can get very aggresive with the timings but i've found keeping them at the standard specs seems to work well enough.

It works well enough in games but if your spending Dominator money you could probably go for the new Geil 1333mhz Black Dragon Kits which offer some serious speed and OC ability... and then have some change left.

I just have a Gigabyte P35 board with an Intel 2160 overclocked to 3Ghz. A decent videocard a friend gave me and that's about it. I couldn't tell you the component parts.
