Customer brought me two PS3's with the same problem as listed above. Error occurred when he was trying to update via internet. On the first, I put the update on a thumb drive and did the update from there. Everything went fine. On the second, I continue to get the error. I've read in other forums to take out HD and format NTSF. I did and got the same result. I can't find any other solutions or suggestions when i google this issue. They are both the fat version that is backwards compatible.

If anyone has had this problem or any suggestions, you would be a lifesaver!

From what I read about that error/fix: Not only do you have to format the drive, but you need to put the previous rom/firmware before the intended update onto the drive.

First link on google

I restored the ps3 back to original if that's what you mean. Or do you mean simply put the update file onto the hard drive?
If you mean go back to a previous rom, I'm not sure how as I searched last night for an hour trying to find older roms in hopes that would fix it.

I was able to start the ps3 in safe mode and attempt an update from there. During this install, I get a Data Corrupt error. I formated the usb stick and put the update file onto it again. Same result. This is the same update/usb stick I used to update the other, so I'm pretty sure I've got something else going on. I also tried the rebuild system option and got "Serious Error has occured. Contact Tech Support".
I have still not been able to locate any old firmware update files to use.
Anybody got any ideas?

Yes, tested old drive and it was good. Put a new drive in just to see and I get same error code. My next step is to take apart and see if there is any damage or loose cables. I've read somewhere that a loose dvd ribbon can cause this issue too.

So I unplugged the bluray drive and tried to do the update that way and ended with same error code. Not sure what to do now. By the looks of google search, I'm the only one in the universe with this type of issue! :(
