I have a customer which it does not matter what browser, anti virus, security settings, he gets rogue spyware/scareware, because he visit lots of dodgy porn sites and will ignore his own antivirus trying to stop something come down because the fake was "really big and looked real"

Over the last year I have been out to him 3 times, he does not want me to setup a Virtual PC, but I hear good things about SandBoxIE, but I see this is a 30 day trial.

Does anyone know of a free alternative to SandboxIE?

Thanks

PS He has no issues with the work done, because he know it is own fault for saying yes to everything, but I would like to try a SandboxIE alternative on a customer like this.

I had a client just like this...was in at least every other month for the same thing. Spyware/Virus infections.

I told him in a joking manner (to avoid an odd conversation :p) that he needed to stop looking at all those sites, which of course he always denied he was doing. I always got a laugh when running CCleaner and watching the names of temporary files passing through...if you could only imagine.

Anyway, I told him over and over again how to avoid the issue, gave him your normal tips, but come the end of the day he really didn't care. Just kept bringing it back

I am pretty sure Sandboxie is free, you only have to pay for some extra features.

Even that, it is $38 or so which should be less than bringing it back to you. Shouldn't be too hard to justify it.

Sandboxie is nagware; it posts registration reminders after 30 days.

It still works after that point, mind you, and I've only had to set up one customer (a minister) with it.

The nag screen Sandboxie throws up after 30 days is very tolerable. It only stays up there for 5 seconds. Set it to automatically delete the sandbox when closing the browser and give it rights to bookmarks and cookies and you can set your client on cruise control. He can surf his porn sites all he wants.

If he's using a dedicated mail client (Outlook, Thunderbird, etc) you may need to train him to right click on that app and "run sandboxed" as that will present a separate vector of attack since Sandboxie will only automatically sandbox your browser by using it's icon. If you pay for the full version you can specify whatever applications you want to run sandboxed by default.

Steady State

Thanks everyone for their suggestions. Funnily enough I did a new customer today with Kaspersky 2010 and they use their browser in Kaspersky Sandbox function and they were heavily infected.

Therefore I decided I will test SandboxIE at some point, but really like the look of Steady State and will test it out on my Virtual PC.

Does anyone know if MS Steady State is going to be continue to be developed as I noticed they do not have Windows 7 version?

The customer that want to put it on has Windows Vista, so not an issue, but it would be nice to know it will continue to be developed.

Thanks
