The system is running XP sp3. I ran a full scan in Malwarebytes and it came up clean.

The user highlights something in IE and goes to print it. The system slows to a crawl or hangs and she has received the following message:

Problem caused by Microsoft Internet Explorer
This problem occurred because Microsoft Internet Explorer, which was created by Microsoft Corporation, was slow or unresponsive.
This type of problem occurs when a program is slow or has stopped responding and you choose to shut it down. This is also referred to as an application hang. Most of the time, there's nothing you could have done to prevent this type of error, but there are some troubleshooting steps you can try.
Troubleshooting

It's hard to determine exactly what causes Internet Explorer to stop responding, but it's usually due to one of the following reasons:
• Spyware, adware, or other malicious software. If you have downloaded free software from the Internet, you might have inadvertently downloaded spyware with it. Spyware is software that can display advertisements (such as pop-up ads), collect information about you, or change settings on your computer, usually without your permission.
• Internet Explorer add-ons: Add-ons are software that add features or tools (an Internet toolbar for example) to Internet Explorer.
• Computer viruses: If your computer has a virus, the virus can cause Internet Explorer to stop responding.
Before using other troubleshooting options, you can try running a troubleshooter that will find and automatically fix some common problems with Internet Explorer add-ons.

The following error messages appear in the application event viewer

Microsoft fax

check the fax service, check the vss service, then I would start thinking about one of the printer devices though now that I think of it...surpisingly I can't say that I have ever had to remove the "Fax" device....i wonder what happens and how to get it back...I really should experiment with that one day.

The Microsoft message suggested testing for malware. The user has Norton's running so I added a Malwarebytes full scan.

I was thinking of possible printer driver problems but was wondering if anyone was familiar with the event viewer messages for stronger confirmation. I am going to get the latest HP drivers now.

I would start by fixing this error which is indicating a printer driver or printer control service problem.

oh my bad i didnt see where you said that the .net one happened everytime.

I just realized the fax device would probably be restored with the appwiz windows features.

I replaced the driver and ran windows update for IE 8 and XP and the HP error still appears.

There seems to be an additional problem that I can't print a selection of a web page in IE 8 but I can in Firefox. In In IE 8, the page comes up empty even though I can print the selection to a PDF generator such as cute pdf. Printing a selection works in Firefox.

Try turning off protected mode in IE.

IE is now crashing with the following

Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 8.0.6001.18702, faulting module mshtml.dll, version 8.0.6001.19403, fault address 0x000b9e88.

Isn't protected mode for preventing unauthorized activex installs and not for printing?

I would run D7 and perform many of the routine Windows fixes like repairing permissions and the IE8 fixes. Since things seem to work OK in Firefox that would tend to indicate the printer subsections are probably fine.

Overall your problem reminds me of issues when a malware infection isn't completely repaired after the cleaning and/or a problem with Microsoft Updates that failed and never got resolved.

Another decent tool is the windows repair tool from tweaking.com

That resets permissions etc. and many other things. I've found it to be very handy at times.

That may be what they say, but protected mode can also affect printing. Just had one a few weeks ago.

If I have a professional copy of D7, how do I use it on a user's computer? Do I install it there? Do I create a bootable cd?

You would copy your D7 directory over to the users computer and run the D7.exe. You should probably test it out on your system first if your not familiar with it. D7 is a powerful tool and highly customizable. You should check out the video tutorials and forum over at www.foolishtech.com

If you are asking these questions, here is what I suggest.

1. Make a full backup image.....if you screw-up, you can always go back.

2. Go to the D7 website and read....read...read. Look at the videos also. This is a very powerful (and excellent) tool, but if you are not familiar with it, you may need that backup image!

3. I've been using D7 for quite some time now and I still find new things I've missed.
