Monday I have a call to transfer (too many years of) old stuff from an old WinXP machine into a new Win10 machine. As usual I will be using FABs. I've never jumper 3-4 OS versions before. Any problems to be aware of?

Not with Fab's per say. Be aware you need to manually look around the deive especially the root C and look for folders with data. End users like to make up there own file system that is non standard and Fabs's only copy's default folders.

Manually looking for rouge files is a must on all OS.

Hello, a new update is available. The issue when the Microsoft users accounts paths were not detected on windows 10 has been solved

Change log for V6.5.6100.48481 pro:

Added :
- Disabled interface updates when processing small files to reduce CPU usage and improve speed.

Fixed :
- The user account paths (desktop, documents, etc...) were not detected for Windows 10 Microsoft accounts.
- The Office 2010 activation files were not detected anymore. Reminder : this feature only works if reinstalling Microsoft Office with the same product key and architecture (32bit or 64bit) on the same machine with the same Windows edition and architecture (32bit or 64bit) with the same Windows product key.
- Improved network shares browsing if used for backup and restore.

I have just released a new update. The main change is that it fixes an important issue with user profiles permissions.

Change log for Fab's AutoBackup 6 V6.5.6110.60280 Pro:

- RAM use improvements optimizations.

Fixed :
- Important fix: It was not possible to access password protected users profiles because the program was not taking their ownership and then could not set the right permissions on them. Backup/Transfer was impossible with such user accounts. Note that this issue remains if running windows XP operating systems because they do not have the Microsoft "takeown.exe" program that is used for this task. The only work around for such systems is to take ownership of the users profiles manually (in safe mode if using Windows XP Home Edition) and set the Administrators group permissions to full control.

I have released a new version for both Fab's AutoBackup 6 and Fab's AutoBackup 6 Pro. As usual, there are a bunch of fixes and improvements.

Here are the changes:
Added :
- Shared network printers are now supported in installed printers list export feature.
- Fab's AutoBackup 6 end user's version (not pro) is now an installable program and does not work anymore as a portable executable. If you have this version, you have to get the update from your store account. You will be able to get the next updates with the updater tool provided with your software.

Changed/Fixed :
- Windows Live mail messages were restored into an "imported folder" instead of their original paths.
- Only one QuickBooks license number was grabbed on machine that had several QuickBooks version installed.
- When plugging a hard drive when the program was already running and refreshing the drives list, the new drive was not shown in the additional folders tree view.
- The user's manual and the technical support forum were not showing up when clicking their icons within the main program.

I choose to make a setup wizard for the end user version because self extracting packages are not easy to understand for some people. I had someone that would not understand anything, even with a special step by step with screen shots. Too tired from pulling out my hair, I made that decision and hopefully, that will prevent people like that from driving me nuts. I hope this will not disturb too much people that got used to the old fashioned distribution package. This does not change for the pro version because this one needs to remain portable.

Yes that is also a good side effect in this case. It forces the "tech" to install it on the (working) client's computer to be able to use it. That can be a bit boring

A new Fab's AutoBackup 6 version is available.

Here are the changes:
Added :
- QuickBooks 2017 license number export is now handled
- When a file cannot be copied and reaches the maximum time out value (10 seconds by default), its full path is shown in the log.
- Ability to set the time out delay in the 'autobackup.ini' configuration file by editing the CopyTimeOutInSeconds value under the [CONFIG] section.
- User's account picture is now handled for Windows 8.X / 10 for backup, restore and transfer. Note: this feature is not fully automated. The user has to go to its user account settings and click the picture to set the avatar. Since the user has already changed his avatar in the past, a simple click is not a big deal

Fixed :
- There were errors when restoring Outlook signatures to another user profile that did not already have a signatures folder.

Meaning I have a Win10 install on a machine that only has USB 2.0 ports and I'd like to pull and dock the drive (eSATA) on a bench machine and restore user data using FABs and the high speed SATA port. I would assume there are no issues but thought I'd ask quick.

If I understand well, you wan tot slave the target drive to your bench machine and restore the file to it. This is not possible that way. Beyond this, Windows 10 has some built-in security mechanism that will just remove everything you would have put on the drive once rebooted.

If USB2.0 ports are too slow, you could use a network share. If you can use a gigabit connection, that would be much faster.

You could copy that archive to the root of the docked recipient drive and put the drive back in to the computer and then run the restore then delete the archive when done. IF drive space permits.

I'll just drop in an eSATA adapter for a bit and pull it when I'm done. My benches are mostly eSATA based instead of USB 3.0. I'd forgot that FABs can restore from a network location and that I'll keep in mind.

I have a feeling that is related to fast startup function in 8/10. A 8/10 computer does not fully shutdown unless you hold the shift button down at the same time or turning off fast startup.

I have just released a new version. This one brings some new features and fixes a bug where is was not possible to backup anything from a pulled hard drive which machine's registry is damaged: the users list was filled with all the directories at Fab's AutoBackup 6 Pro drive's root instead of the real users profiles on the sick drive.

Here is the full change log:

Added:
- Latest Opera web browser support.
- Vivaldi web browser support.
- Java security sites exceptions list.
- Nirsoft WirelessKeyView has been updated to 2.0.5 and can now extract Wi-Fi keys from external windows pulled drives. Fab's AutoBackup has been modified to handle such new feature.

Fixed:
- The users profiles list could not be retrieved when loading a pulled hard drive with damaged machine registry (Pro version).
- Some foreign characters were not displayed properly in HTML Logs and exports.

Removed:
- Opera web browser (12.X and earlier) is not supported anymore.
