Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro - a must have tool for techs

Is there a way to store logs/report files at the originating point where the application was run? (Even possibly with the original PC name as the file name?)

I have only just recently purchased v6/7 Pro and they completed somewhat successfully, but stalled at the finish line. Being a bit crunched for time, I didn't bother to check the file that it saved on the desktop, and just deleted it. (This has happened on about 3-4 different systems, but will be sure to save the file next time.)
At least I could store the original PC name in the "backup.conf" file. This way, I would be able to insert it into the log's file name at restore.

just bought your software. Sorry if this has been asked before but i have a question. when doing a transfer do you install all the programs first on the new system then do the transfer or can you do that after the transfer?

Thanks
Kevin

It does not matter

may be a daft question but is this compatible with restoring backups from fabs 6?

Hi Fabrice,

I have tried to upgrade to version 7 at your website, when I press submit I just get a blank page. This on multiple browsers and machines? When should I try again? Thanks for a great piece of software

I do not know where this issue is from. It happens to some people and not others. I can convert it for you, all I need is your order ID (PM it please).

What are you thinking about ?

The FABs restore seems to work best/reliably as late in the OS and app install process as possible and of course telling FABs to "Overwrite" (something that is not apparent to a newbie) when it pauses at the end of a Restore. I've used it directly after a Windows install and it seems by the end of installing all the apps, some things were over-written.

Aloha Fab,

First, mahalo nui loa (thank you very much) for continuing to improve AutoBackup. I'm assuming you have a "to do" list for this product. Would you be willing to share the list here so we can provide some feedback and maybe add to the list?

Mahalo,

Well,
For now, I only have improvements on the list:
- Find a way to really export Edge favorites and reimport them into new profile's Edge database regardless of which Windows version the backup comes from.
- Improve the multi-user restore behavior by adding an explicit way to handle public items (this one is already done on test builds).
- Speed up the files comparison between source and target locations when a backup has already been done to the same location earlier.
Other things will come to the list

Please consider adding the following MINOR items:

- Use the default browser instead of Internet Explorer when clicking the "Show Log" button

- Keep the original creation date for folders when doing a transfer or restore

Mahalo!

I am a bit surprised about the first request. On my side, Firefox opens fine when clicking this icon. In the source code, the progam is set to look at the registry at "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\command", so when the default browser is set at this level, no problem. I have changed it to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\http\shell\open\command" instead.

The second one is a lot trickier: Fab's AutoBackup lists the files to copy and recreates all the folders. That's difficult to also list EVERY folder, get their dates AND keep good performance.

agreed, that will result in a substantial performance hit. If there is sufficient interest, it might be worth doing as an option only, off by default and with a warning.

Any thoughts about my earlier suggestion of reporting the default web browser and email client? Other default apps might also be useful.
That's not so easy to do. It would have to crawl into the registry, finding every file extension for the user, also the machine, and generate a report without even the ability to set the default programs back since this is no longer allowed.
