Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro - a must have tool for techs

Thanks. Problem is that I'm forced to use Delphi 2010 and this one does not have the regular expressions unit. I have to use matchesmask function instead.

That's not a bad thing - matchesmask is rather nice for something like this.

If it were my code I'd probably try matching against "*KB[0-9][0-9][0-9][0-9]*" and hope that lower number KBs no longer exist in the wild, but I wouldn't put money on that.

Hello,
Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro and Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office 7.11.0.5812 have just been released.

Here is the change log for both versions:

Added:
- PRO Only: Ability to disable features that require PowerShell scripts (VSS snapshots creation feature, BitLocker key handling, Nirsoft tools whitelisting from Windows Defender). This has been added for users who cannot whitelist the Fab's AutoBackup executable and have their anti-malware trowing alerts about PowerShell scripts it tries to run.
Of course, the affected items will not work if this option is enabled. If you really need to disable PowerShell features, then add the DisablePowerShell=1 value under [CONFIG] section in the autobackup.ini file.
- The program now handles local Windows policies (set with GPEdit.msc).

Fixed:
- The program did not follow folder junctions (symbolic links). Now, only the ones containing "application data" characters remain ignored to avoid some weird behavior while processing paths like "X:\users\UserName\AppData\Local..."
- Quickbooks did not appear on installed software list export.
- Job log was saved in transfer mode even if it was set to never be saved.
- Pinned Explorer folders item showed grayed out at restore even if it was in the backup.

Grab it from your orders history's details on the shop's website at https://archive.fpnet.fr/account.php (ordered before May 1st 2022) or https://store.fpnet.fr/en/order-history for newer orders. You can also use the bundled updater tool (click the "Download Fab's AutoBackup 7.X" link within the program and get the updated files).

This is likely NOT a Fabs Autobackup issue...

but when I try to do a backup on my wife's system it wants to download all her iCloud photos instead of just doing the thumbnails. Now I'm not opposed to getting the full versions for my backup but I'm thinking it shouldn't do that by default?

I'm using the latest version of Pro 7.11.0.5812

PS. ICloud for Windows is one of my least favorite programs. Constant thorn in my side!

I'm not familiar with icloud but I guess it may have a feature like OneDrive that downloads the files when trying to access one of them. If this is really annoying, you can disable that item using the defaults.ini file.

Anyone else having trouble with Product Key retrieval? Fabs transfers are producing an empty Product Keys file, has happened on all recent jobs. I've also tried running ProduKey manually and had nothing found either.

While on the Nirsoft site to download ProduKey, I noticed another utility WinMailPassRec (for Windows 10/11 Mail app config & passwords). It would be very useful if included in Fabs:

Yes, I'll look at it. If it works from the command line, that tool would be part of the current email passwords item.
Thanks for the heads up

Humm, reading the product's page, it doesn't look like so. The only command line switches I see are to generate language translation files for it.
Fab's will not be able to drive it :/
Second stop is that it will not work if windows profile is logged on with a Microsoft account and that's often the case...

Hello,
Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro and Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office 7.11.1.5839 have just been released.

Here is the change log for both versions:
Added:
- Ability to edit the autobackup.ini configuration file easier. An item in the title bar contextual menu (right-click) has been added for that. This is useful for Home & Office users who will not have to dig into hidden "Program data" folder when they want to add some particular settings..
Fixed:
- The program could miss some empty folders that in fact contained a hidden desktop.ini file. Because of this, those folders were not recreated when restoring data.

Ordered a copy of Fabs 7.

Didn't need it. But damn, have I sure as hell got the milage out of my copy of Fabs 6 pro I ordered... geez.... I think like 6 years ago? I figure that's worth the support alone, and well... a newer updated version of something I already got a lot of great use out of? Why not?

A few setups I've done recently have offered to migrate the stuff from the old computer using the customer's Microsoft account and OneDrive. In fact, working on one today. I let it do that and I got docs and other items. Noticed that Edge settings carried over. Haven't tried Firefox yet.

Currently waiting on Fab's to finish before I go back. What's the best practice when using Microsoft's migration and Fab's together?

I would not use OneDrive at all unless you have plenty of space on it since most of the time, user's have more data than it can fit on a free account.

Apart from that, I'll pass on this question as I don't know exactly what can migrate or not through OneDrive. Perhaps some others have experience with it

One Drive does Documents, Pictures, and the Desktop if there is enough storage like with M365. If you sign in to edge when started with your MS account and it was logged in from the beginning, before issues, it will sync that account data as well.

If a user has Firefox or Chrome and has sync enabled all that is needed is to reinstall and log in to them.

As for Fabs I backup everything just in case but I am selective on restoring depending on the client. I let Onedrive and the browse sync do their work.

Hello,
Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro and Fab's AutoBackup 7 Home & Office 7.12.0.5936 have just been released.

Here is the change log for both versions:
Added:
- Support for Microsoft Office programs recently opened files lists (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, Publisher, Visio and Word).
Fixed:
- It was not possible to send feedback in case of errors or in debug mode.
- Some error messages could appear when trying to close the program by clicking the "cross" button more than once. Now, a click on this button disables it and the program can then perform cleanup operations before it closes.

Can you clarify on this feature? Does it restore the most recently opened file list that appears when you open Word or does it just list the files in a .txt file or something? What if the username is different on the restored computer? Does it redirect the path? Does Office have to be installed before you run Fabs to do the restore or does this still work if you install Office afterwards?

That's really the list that appears in Word, not a .txt export.

Good point. At the moment it does not. I need to polish it a bit more so it could handle this in a future release.

That's a registry export so it does not need Office to be installed before.

Awesome! This will save me a ton of time with my worst computer illiterate clients who don't understand that their documents aren't stored "in" Word.

Yeah, this is a 100% essential feature.

Cool. If you can fix the path redirect this will be an extremely useful feature.
