Fab's AutoBackup 7 Pro - a must have tool for techs

I am sorry but I can't do that because that will increase RAM use a lot. Now, I am using an invisible copy list with shorts codes that replace the full path for every file and this saves a lot of ram. If I do that, the RAM use will be increased and most of all, I will have to rewrite the entire copy list processing stuff and that's just horrific.

You know more about this stuff than I do, but I just wanted to say that Unstoppable Copier doesn't use a lot of RAM to do what it does and list all the files in columns. The file copy list just seems...unfinished. I would recommend getting rid of the day/date stamp (who doesn't know what day it is?). It would also be nice to have the file and folder name in separate columns so it's easy to tell what file is being transferred, and a short list of previously transferred files. These don't need to be literal sort-able columns (though that would be great). This is just for visual purposes so it's easier to see and discern the data.

At the very least the text size should be smaller so we can see more of it. Right now the text is so big that you can see it from across the room.

Just like that?

Yeah, like that. But I still think it should be further down away from the rest of the boxes. The information showing what file is copying is different than the data showing the info about the data that's being transferred.

Looks like whatever I do, this will never be good until I have it looking exactly like unstoppable copier. This will have to be done in a second part with the amount of work required

Nah, it doesn't have to be exact. The file copy interface is just difficult to read. You don't have to do it in columns if it's a lot of work. It would just be a lot easier to tell what files are being copied rather than just having a list with time stamps and such that aren't really needed for a cursory glance. This information is good for a log file, but not good for a file copy list to look at while you're transferring the data.

Is this better?
I like these proposed changes. More visibility about what's happening is great.

In my opinion, dropping the 'Copying file' box down to the bottom in line with the Cancel button isn't necessary. If you used that latest idea of a read-only text box with no separate label it looks different from the totals above anyway, and it could be given a different colour or attribute such as italics to distinguish it aesthetically. If it was above the Cancel button again, it would allow longer file paths to be displayed due to the extra width.

This box is for displaying file NAMES, not file paths. Unless you have a filename that's 100's of characters long, the length of the box won't be an issue. The one thing I would change (I wasn't even going to mention this because it's not a big deal, but for aesthetic reasons) would be the height of either the file name text box or the cancel button so that they're the same size. Again, not a big deal but it would give it a more polished look.

Great. I could release this one in a first place but not today. The day has been hard and now, I just want to rest with a cool drink.
For information, I will be on vacation from next Monday, so, I will not be as responsive as today.

Don't worry about it. I'm just glad to have a hand in suggesting new features for Fabs. It's a good program with just a few glaring problems. That's why it's #3 in my list of data backup programs (#1 is Unstoppable Copier and #2 is TeraCopy (the old version before the UI went to crap)).

If this and a few other minor UI issues were fixed, Fabs would be my #1 data transfer program (for drives that are in good health that I'm sure don't have damaged files). And I REALLY want to move Fabs up to the #1 spot because Unstoppable Copier hasn't been updated in 8 years and the old version of TeraCopy is about 6 years old. I want to use supported, up to date software in my business! I want to pay for new software, but there just isn't anything better out yet!

Well, I did not want to expand the copying file text box or shrink the cancel button's size (I would have to shrink all the other buttons to keep them in harmony). I finally preferred to go back to a label for that with an italic font:

It does not look bad IMO.

@fabs I've made a mockup in Photoshop. Can you make it look like this?

As I Laye A-Dreamynge Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch
Well:
- first,I need to find another progress bar type because the standard one does not allow to put text on it. By the way, is that percentage the current file progress or the entire job progress?
- The text labels and information boxes can be moved like that BUT, Fab's AutoBackup is translated into several languages and not all of the translated string will fit in such little lengths. It is better to keep these items where they are.
- No problem about the copying file text edit.

1. What Unstoppable Copier does is it has the percentage of the individual file in the text box with the file name, but it shows it via progress bar vs. text percentages. That would be a great addition to the bar at the bottom that lists the file that's being copied at that moment. This helps because it might take a looooooooong time to copy a file (say, several gigabytes or larger) and appear to be frozen to the end user, but with a progress indicator for each file that's being processed, there's no guessing whether the program is frozen up or not. Having an overall global progress bar with a percentage is a good idea too. Unstoppable Copier has both of these.

2. Is there a way to have the text fields dynamically adjust depending on their content? That way for languages that have longer labels, they will still be visible. The way you have it set up now, the boxes on the right side are smaller than the ones on the left side and it looks wrong. In addition, centering these elements helps differentiate the live log from the rest of the elements on the page.

3. That's good.

I have done it like that:

Yes, the screen shot is in French and as you can see, labels just fit. I do not know what's going on with other languages since I do not have other translations for the new strings yet.
I still had no luck about the file percentage on the progress bar but I have tweaked it so it uses 10000 increments instead of 100 like it did before. This way, it should be always moving, even with huge files being copied.
Perhaps I should release this one now since there are issues to fix in the official release.
