OK, I need to retract an earlier statement on another topic. This is an instance where I absolutely would be thinking primarily about a "marketing department perspective." Clearly Plimoth Plantation Yarn doesn't have one. I know lots of folks who knit. This name would not be a selling point.

That name is apparently historically accurate and, of course, properly describes the color in a real world manner that someone in the Middle Ages would understand. At the bottom of the 1500-1580 (top) section at link below.
