I have always preferred cats over dogs because "the loyalty patch" in a dog's brain often seems to outweigh all others. I have said, metaphorically of course, that you could beat most dogs to a pulp with a baseball bat in a fit of rage, provided it's only once, and they'll come running to you later like nothing happened. Try that with a cat and they'll attack you then, run as soon as the attack is done, and that "murder patch" will come to the fore later, and probably permanently.

I consider the latter behavior far more logical, reasonable, and "human like."

I still like dogs, but they'll never be my pet of choice.
Please dont go beating on dogs or any other animal to test this theory....

Does the second conclusion follow from the first? Fascinating. I prefer dogs precisely because they are less human-like - haha. We had both (usually 2 cats and 2 dogs) for most of my adult life, only recently not opting to "replace" the last cat when he passed on. Since every pet was a "Rescue" we've had lots of different personalities, and overall I'd say that dogs prefer human companionship while cats merely tolerate it. I've always imagined cats saying that phrase from 'The Princess Bride': "Good night, good work, sleep well....I'll most likely kill you in the morning." 😛

@HCHTech,

I absolutely believe you're right about the quote from The Princess Bride and, yes, that's a part of the appeal of a cat for me. Right now, and for quite a while, I haven't had a cat (or cats) since I have parrots. For the blue & gold macaw and African grey, no cat would be much of a threat, but for the Senegal, that's a different story.

For me, dogs fawn over humans (including me) and fawning just "isn't my thing," regardless of who or what does it. I like my companions, animal or otherwise, to have an element of independence, and edge, to them that dogs just don't. And what "doesn't do it" for me is what makes others prefer them over all other pet choices. Chacun à son goût.

One of my favorite observations on Cats vs. Dogs: Dogs have owners, cats have staff.

This is why I "torture" one of my cats,. I basically just pick him up and listen to him growl and make unpleasant sounds because he hates to be loved.
