I'll remember that till the day I die. Got it as a class reading assignment but all the teacher said was it was a some what fictional story about turn of the century working conditions. Need less to say I was shocked after reading sections discussing lost body parts going into processed foods. My Dad worked for Caterpillar so was familiar with "manufacturing" environment. When I asked him he just shook his head saying that was pretty much the truth back in those days.

Hence the reason for the rise of both labor regulations and FDA inspections.

There seems to be this idea floating out there on the ether that there exists a government Department of Bureaucracy For Its Own Sake. It's never been true, and still isn't. Regulations do not spring up just because some random bureaucrat(s) "think it would be a good idea" and it's not easy to get a single one into place. Unfortunately, it's as difficult to get certain ones deleted when it's become obvious to all involved that the intended purpose is not being served.
