From my experience it's not that rare. Years ago when I was doing a lot more break fix I'd use a piece of paper with an outline drawn and screws placed in position for notebook which I was not familiar with or didn't have a service manual. Happens with printers as well. If you look at the service manuals they almost always list screw type, thread type and lengths.This must be the joke of the laptop manufacturers, there was a third more noticeable sized screw. I didn't notice the difference between these until refitting. No markings on the case to indicate the screws that were needed for that hole

I have a magnetic mat which I have had for years. All laptops screws come out and go into position on mat for that very reason. Dam hard to tell the difference between 2mm and 2.5mmFrom my experience it's not that rare.
