(IMAP & iPad/iPhone) Emails moved to folders reappear in inbox.

I have a client who is really unhappy with how his email situation is right now.

He does not use a computer for email he only uses an iPad and an iPhone. He isn't very tech savvy so he likes the pretty apple OS.

The Problem:

He receives and sends email just fine. But when he tries to move email into a folder from his inbox, all of the emails he moved usually 50 or more, gets copied to the folder he moved them to, they disappear from the apple GUI like they actually moved, but if you wait 10 minutes or reboot his i device his inbox fully repopulates with all of the emails that were supposed to have moved.

I called GoDaddy, they say it's a "feature" of apple products i.e. apples fault, and they is nothing they can do because when you do this action in webmail everything works fine.

If you watch and refresh the godaddy webmail while you move emails from his iPad to a folder all of the emails get copied to the folder but never leave the inbox, hence why they reappear.

Help!

I'm guessing he's using IMAP? If so, is there any type of setting in the GoDaddy email configuration backend that relates to how messages are handled when being moved from one folder to another? Just a random guess.

Actually it IS Apples fault. I went through a nightmare where I had to forward about 2000 emails manually one by one because when I "successfully" moved emails between accounts (hotmail -> gmail) they got stuck on the phone and only on the phone. I had called Apple up and spoke to one of their engineers (after much frustration and dealing with Level 1 idiots at first, and many hours I must add) and basically this is a software flaw in Ios (3,4,5). The only option your client has is to do this type of thing through their browser or if Godaddy has an app to do it (which I'm quite certain they do not). Sorry to break it to you..I learned this the VERY hard way.

P.S. They have NO tool, no WAY to extract emails from the device if they get stuck on it so don't take a chance!

This can't be right. I've used iOS for years + IMAP and never had this problem. If it's not Godaddy, then something isn't setup correctly.

Try this:
On iPhone:
- Settings
- Mail
- Click account name
- Click "Account XXXXX@XXXXX.com"
- Click "Advanced"
- Under IMAP Path Prefix type "INBOX"
- Cross fingers and test again

Hope this helps!

P.S. Majestic: your problem sounds POP related to me. Were you dealing with IMAP or POP?

Majestic: so one email account with both POP & IMAP? Or you experienced this on separate occasions with separate/unique POP and IMAP email accounts? If the former, it may make sense -- it should only be setup as IMAP if you want all mailboxes to stay in sync, the POP account may be holding stuff and not letting go. If the latter, not really sure.

Hmmm ...

Apple blames godaddy and claims to have never heard of this despite multiple posts online regarding this problem or the problem where emails dont delete from the inbox properly.

Then godaddy blames apple and says its a "feature" of apples iOS devices.

Godaddy does have an app: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/go-daddy-domain-email-manager/id333201813?mt=8

Maybe i'll have to have him use a combination of the builtin apple mail app with the godaddy app.

Either way hes not going to like any of the answers I have to give him short of yes it will magically work now. I've tried to get him to just leave all his emails in his inbox, or sort them from a computer and not the iPad but he wont budge.

Goaddy suggested hosted exchange ... which "may" work but it would take a hell of a lot of work just to see if it might work for him.

So my "settings" suggestion didn't work?

This just removed the rest of his folders except his inbox ... rebooting the ipad now, after removing the imap prefix the folders never came back ... I may have to recreate the imap account.

Interesting… it didn't remove them, it's just starting at a different place "/inbox" which many imap accounts use for a starting point. Google uses [Gmail], hostgator uses INBOX, not sure what Godaddy uses, but you may want to find out and try that.

It seems Godaddy uses no prefix. I would recommend deleting the email account on the iphone altogether (and make sure all email is now gone off the phone), then follow these instructions:
http://support.godaddy.com/help/article/3423/iphone-setting-up-email

Did this.

Ok so after doing extensive research on the issue it looks like there is no solution here, the bottom line is GoDaddy and Apple mail do not work well together period.

There has been many articles of people having difficulties setting up their Apple products to a GoDaddy email account, Imap and POP.

Here is what I did to come to this conclusion:

1.) The issue is consistent for his iPad and his iPhone
2.) Removed and reset-up the email account in the iOS device.
3.) Tried moving a single email, bulk emails, all had inconsistent results especially when the iOS device was rebooted anytime within a 15 minute time frame of moving the email.
4.) Setup my personal Gmail account as IMAP on his iPad. Moving emails within the Apple mail interface to folders was instant. Exactly like it is supposed to be.
5.) Setup the GoDaddy app on his iPad. When moving emails through the GoDaddy app (sucks because it's designed for a phone so its all smushed), emails move instant just like they are supposed to.
6.) Setup his email account on my personal phone as IMAP (Android). Moving emails on my phone were instant, just like they are supposed to.

Apple blames GoDaddy, GoDaddy blames Apple.

His options moving forward are:

1.) Check mail on the iPad as normal, but when he wants to move emails he needs to do it within the GD app (cumbersome and I know he wont like this.)
2.) Buy an android device for email.
3.) Switch to Google Apps for email, or a hosted exchange.
4.) Use the GD app exclusively (ugly and no push).

Wow, that's crazy and sucks. I think Option 3 is best. Or at least setup godaddy to forward all email to a free gmail account (which works fine on ios). Thanks for the info.

I have successfully used several different email accounts on my iOS devices. Basically I create a Gmail account for each email, set up the original account as an authorized account in the new Gmail and forward all email from the original to the Gmail.

In the iOS device I setup the Gmail account, not using the standard "Gmail" type, instead use "Other" and setup all the settings manually using Gmails settings.

This method has worked for me successfully with different email accounts.

My Problem here would be getting all of his existing folders off godaddy and into gmail. I mean I could export the entire IMAP tree into a PST but Gmail doesn't allow importing of PST files so all of his existing email would go poof.

never mind scratch that ... i could open both his email accounts in outlook as IMAP simultaneously and copy each folder over through outlook.

such a messy round about way of retrieving mail though ....

Then how do you setup the reply to email on an iOS device to reply to his email at his GD domain email address so people arent sending him mail directly to his gmail account (too maintain professionalism).

Gmail has a setting for "Send As" that allows you to send an email with another email address name once you have verified you own the email address. If you look through the email headers the originating gmail acct is visible but not on the "From:" line.

In the iOS settings, setup the name and email address that you want to use, but use the gmail imap and smtp account settings. Also any email Sent through the gmail smtp will added to the "Sent" emails folder, so there is no need to BCC yourself or move Sent emails.

Yes messy is a excellent word to describe the setup, but functional is another. I personally use this method for my email as my hosting provider does not provide an email service and I am not ready to begin paying for some else.

Thanks for explaining this it makes more sense now.
