Hey guys,

I normally don't involve myself in building machines unless it is for myself or for family but I got a call from someone who had all the parts and just needed someone to piece it together. How bad could it be?! I took the job..

it was for a high spec gaming rig, contains an Intel i7-5930K processor sitting on a Gigabyte x99 Gaming 5p E-ATX Board (LG2011-3) and a Corsair H100i Hydro Cooler

32GB of DDR4 HyperX fury
GeForce GTX Titan X graphics card

Symptoms: Computer will power on for about 5 seconds and will abruptly power off. No Beeps no POST no BIOS. the system automatically tries to fire itself up again about 3 seconds later only to shut down again (and continue forever unless unplugged/interrupted)

What i've Done: Tested the power supply and that is fine. Going back later today or tomorrow night to try taking all but one RAM chip out and so fourth continuing to attempt to boot with no components other than MoBo and CPU and adding chips one by one.. going to also try pulling CMOS battery (saw that as a suggestion for this board on another forum) and if anyone thinks it is worth a shot i saw a suggestion about the BIOS on these boards being bad from the factory and to DL the latest from MFG website and try to flash it.

having little hope in those solutions what else can anyone suggest. trying not to have to take the rig back to the office and or have to send parts back for RMA unless we absolutely have to.

any help is greatly appreciated!

Brian

This is what I would call an "educational opportunity". :-) Only take these jobs after you have very clearly stated that you can't be responsible if they ordered the wrong parts, and your time is billable no matter what.

That said, try booting with no RAM whatsoever. It should give you error beeps. If it does not, the motherboard is on the suspects list. Your power supply could be on that list as well. Try another. Is the exact CPU you have on the list of supported CPUs for that motherboard? Is the exact RAM you have on the list of supported RAM? Take a very close look at the CPU socket. If the original attempt mounted the CPU wrong, the contacts could be bent or otherwise screwed up. You will need a way to magnify them well enough to see - I use my phone's camera on zoom.

Good luck, but try not to let this be a time-sink.

Thanks for the reply, I told them before we opened any boxes that often boards come DOA. They're not upset about it but its just now a job I'll have to slot into everywhere I have time till its fixed.

I'll definitely try pulling up the CPU and checking all around it. I have a feeling it's either something stupid like bad ram or the biggie bad CPU and or MoBo. Both would suck as it would be basically rebuilding the build.

Thanks again for the help!

Does the board have a set of pins to be able to attach a speaker? HCH pretty much said what I thought. Also try the board out of the case to rule out a weird short. Disconnect everything non essential from the board (usb, etc).

It could also be that the power switch is sticking/faulty although i'd expect it to stay off. Try shorting the pin manually instead of using the switch.

Sorry but have to ask, is the power connected to the titan gfx card
Also 4 or 8 pin 12v connector from psu to mobo as well?
Feeling like a total idiot! The 12v CPU connection was loose.. all is well now. however, when the system boots there are 5 beeps that i assume are coming from this fancy fan control device mounted in the space you'd put a CD drive.

anywho, customer is happy. I am embarrassed!

thanks for all the help guys!

Also make sure nothing is grounding, make sure all studs and installed correctly and no metal is contacting other metal that shouldn't be.

Lesson be learned, there is often little room for any easy profit here. Often times these people know what the parts
cost retail and won't want to pay much more, and will gripe if and when you have to spend hours hunting down things
like this.

Yeah that's the thing about the computer repair business, having to slot a job in that didn't go as planned, and finding the time to do so.

Forever shuffling schedules for clients. Glad this one is over and it was just an overlook on my part. Client was happy to not have to send parts back they didn't mind the human error [emoji15]

In fact, they recommended me to a friend already to build a pc for them... I'll be sure to check my connections 4 times on that one!
