Windows Repair Toolbox

I've tried different media, such as a 1TB ext HDD, various USB keys and even went "old school" and burnt it to a CD-R!
It's the same.
The machines I'm using it on are all reformatted Windows 7 and 8.1, default installs from original DVD's, no 3rd party programs loaded initially, no 3rd party AV, Windows defender Disabled.
WRT 1.9.0.4 loads in about 4~5 seconds. I can work with my Custom Tools without problems.
WRT 1.9.0.5 takes up to 5~6 minutes to load, if at all, and starts "Not Responding" almost immediately. If I just leave it be for a few minutes it comes back to life but a minute or two later it stop responding again.
I've notice that the computers (all of them) become very sluggish and tasks seem to take a long time to complete when 1.9.0.5 is "Not Responding".
Opening a window (Eg: opening the Download Folder) fails to display it's content until WRT starts responding again.
Hope this helps?
Edit: I should add that the 8 machines are 5th Gen Core i5, 6th Gen Core i7 and two AMD FX 8370 Processors, with between 4GB and 8GB Ram.

Can you please provide me remote access with TeamViewer to one of them so that I can do a couple of tests? Just send me a PM with the ID and password.

edit: is it possible that there's something on the network where those computers are connected that is preventing WRT from connecting to the internet? Like some security feature that wasn't blocking the previous version, but that is blocking the current one?

Anyone else experiencing the same?

Thank you.

Hi all, I've just released version 1.9.0.6. It basically contains two fixes, and some improvements in the "Notes" tab.

Fixed:
- If the "start_WRT_in_reduced_functionality_mode.bat" was right-clicked > "Run as Administrator", from some location that was not the system drive, it would return an error. This as been fixed, and now it will also work correctly in that scenario.

- WRT was able to run under a Standart User Account with UAC disabled, when it shouldn't. This would result in WRT being launched without administrative privileges, and consequently in several errors during it's use.

Added:
- Added a proper "Save" button to the "Notes" tab. The previous one was a "Save as..." button and that would make it unpractical when one just wanted to quick save some annotations made to an already saved file . Now both "Save as..." and "Save" buttons are present in the "Notes" tab.

Besides, a previously kept file that you load in the "Notes" tab, will now be automatically saved every minute. This is in order to make sure that at least your most recent annotations are saved if something unexpected terminates the program.

Hey @AlexCa I had to get the computers back to the client, so remoteing in is not an option.
I tried 1.9.0.6 on the last box I did before returning to the client and it did the same thing. Also tried 1.9.0.6 on a couple of laptops I had in and it still stops responding.
1.9.0.4 seems to be fine however.
All machines had full internet access.
I'll stick with 1.9.0.4 for now and try the latest version from time to time to see if anything changes.

Ok, thank you. If you happen to have a machine with that symptom and I can remote in just let me know. I would bet that is something in the network blocking the internet connection monitor (can i send you a test build with the internet connection monitor disabled for you to test? Just send me your email via PM).

So far I've been using versions above 1.9.0.4 without problems in different PC's and networks, and no one else reported me that issue (and I've been receiving feedback through email). E.g, this video from yesterday with the user running 1.9.0.5:

Yes, I was having a trouble with SDI not loading themes when launched through WRT (back in September 2016). I went to BadPointer at that time, and he told me that I needed to "change the current dir with the CD command, so that SDI could find themes and translations".

I was able to do it by using the -data_dir: switch, like in this sample:

cd C:\Windows_Repair_Toolbox\Downloads\Snappy\SDI_R496
SDI_x64_R496.exe -data_dir:C:\Windows_Repair_Toolbox\Downloads\Snappy\SDI_R496\tools\SDI

So, I'm still using the data_dir: switch in order to be able to load the themes and translations, and I haven't tried to remove it since then. Should I give it a go?

Do you actually create a batch file to launch it?

Yes, at runtime. I had to do that in order to overcome that problem. Just check the SDIO folder and you'll find there a "snappy_wrt.cmd" file.

Peculiar to SDIO. I occasionally resort to .bat files in order to make use of some switches, but normally the programs are executed directly.

@glennd
Directly through code, it's basically the same as double-clicking the program, instead of using a .bat file to run it.

Hey @AlexCa I use a lot of "portable" tools through the Custom Tools option, as well as installers.
Sometimes when I'm not concentrating I click "yes" to download another copy of the (portable) program, which deletes the original.
The problem is that it throws an error as there is no defined URL to go to. I don't want to "install" the program, just run it, so I don't want the executable.
So I have to go to the relevant site, find the portable, and reinstate it in the "Custom Tools" folder.
All of my portable programs are licensed so I have log in to get the program, then renter license details as well.
It's not a major problem, just annoying.
Would be interested in your thoughts please.

Hi Greg, I'm sorry I still haven't had the time to implement it. I'm working on other stuff for the next version, and I'll tackle that for the following one.

What Greg is mentioning here is a cool workaround that he found out in order to be able to add tools directly to the Custom Tools, without the need to download them. It works like this:

Place your folder and files directly inside the "Custom Tools" folder. Then add the entries to the custom.xml regarding the tools that you would like to be shown in the list. For instance:

<LINKS title="Geek Uninstaller" link="F:\Windows Repair Toolbox\Downloads\Custom Tools\geek.exe" exe="geek.exe"/>

Here the "F:\" simply represents the pendrive from running Windows Repair Toolbox is being executed, it might be another letter; and the file you want to run can be located inside a sub-directory inside the Custom Tools folder, no problem.

Finally, when you click "Start!" in the "Custom Tools" tab you'll be asked if you want to download a new copy. The answer here should be "no", so that it won't happen what Greg is describing.

Hi all, I've just released version 1.9.0.7. Here's what's changed:

- The monitors will now run on their own separated threads.

- Before the beginning of the "Run Unattended", all tools previously downloaded by WRT used to be deleted.
Now only those that are necessary to delete will be deleted - in order to shorten the preparation time, to save bandwidth, and to preserve the "Custom Tools" folder.

- If you’ve added custom tools to WRT, when clicking “Clear Downloads” in the settings tab you’ll now be asked if you also want to delete them as well or if you prefer to keep them.

- When executed as part of the "Run Unattended", Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, besides the high and moderate threat levels, will now also neutralize objects with low threat levels (changed the command line argument from -processlevel 2 to -processlevel 3).

- Fixed: when executed under WRT, SDIO wasn’t showing the initial welcome screen (thanks @glennd for reporting and helping solve).

- Some other internal improvements and changes.

As always, your feedback is welcome.

Thanks!

Woot! Thanks @AlexCa
WRT just keeps getting better!
This is my "go to tool" now! Any job I'm doing it's the first program open. All my tools are accessible. Got a large list of tools in my "Custom Tools" section, portables and installers, plus ninite installers, so no more hunting around for them.
I even run Fabs Autobackup from there as well.

Is WRT's website down? I noticed the past few weeks it was unable to 'phone home' anymore when starting to check on updates, and, now when I go to the website, it times out, offering/showing a cached version instead....

(I was able to get it from 'techspot', but, generally prefer to use the main source when possible...)
